Peugeot 306 GTI-6 | Spotted

Less than 100,000 miles, a recent cambelt and £4,500 - come on, people!

How often do we read about great classic cars becoming out of reach? All too regularly. A rapidly changing automotive landscape, dwindling numbers and a couple of crazy auction results has pulled the market up in the past few years, with little sign of it dropping off, either. Cars that were once a few grand are now tens of thousands, and then the margins just seem to get bigger and bigger the further up the price scale you go. Which is all a bit demoralising for those after a cheap and cheerful modern classic.

It makes for especially grim viewing as seemingly every sector is affected, everything from sports cars to saloons and roadsters to grand tourers. Need proof? Just a decade has passed since the E34 M5 Shed of the Week. In 2011 it was possible to buy the last hand-built M5 for £1,000; it needed some work, yes, but it had an MOT. That's how drastic the shift has been.

Hot hatches seem to have been most severely affected by the past 10 years or so of change. Cars that were cheap to begin with were inevitably popular, but it also made them more vulnerable to scrappage schemes because they just weren't worth that much at the start of the last decade. To the casual car buyer, being offered more than twice their old car's value off something brand new was pretty hard to turn down.

The result being that values for the survivors have shot up, and arguably there's no brand that shows that off better than Peugeot. There are stories of people struggling to shift good 205 GTIs for £900 as recently as 2012; it feels like they've been £10k-plus for ages now. The £30k 309 GTI exists, as does the 106 Rallye on offer at substantially more than its new cost. With 130,000 miles...

Yet the 306 GTI-6 seems to have escaped it all, which has to be good news for the despondent enthusiast. Here is another Peugeot icon that was as good to drive as it was to look at, the class of its field for its entire time on sale (and for years after as well). That it was never directly replaced only adds to the 306's allure. It's peak French hot hatch, really, but doesn't seem to garner the affection (or the values) of its predecessors. Weird.

Still, it makes this one look even better. For sale at just £4,500 (or a third as much as any of the roadworthy 205s on PH), this GTI-6 has 93,000 miles, a recent cambelt - it's crucial these are swapped on time - and what's said to be a full service history for its 22-year life. The MOT history isn't exactly blemish free, but it's surely nothing that diligent ownership couldn't rectify (see the chipped windscreen that went unfixed between tests). More importantly, it's standard, it presents well enough in the pics (see the driver's seat bolster that's still intact) and it's really not much money at all - let's not lose sight of that.

Maybe it needs a bit of work to get back to its best, but what a car that will result at the end, a great GTI from Peugeot at the peak of its powers. Once the GTI-6 and Rallye were done, Peugeot gave up on hot hatches - or the cars drove like they had, at least - and only returned with the Peugeot Sport 208 almost 15 years later. It absolutely deserves recognition with 205s, 106s and 309s, even if current values still don't reflect its significance. Which all serves to make this one, surely, a bit of a bargain.

Some will say they're not that great, and it's true they're not that fast or that powerful but the ride, composure and handling was like witchcraft. I had one, now long departed to the scrap heap in the sky but it should be noted at that age it'll need regular fettling. I had mine for about 4 years and it honestly felt like every MOT and often in between something went wrong that wasn't an easy or cheap fix. Most bills from my local trusted Mechanic started with a 3 or a 4 and every MOT was met with frustration.

When I eventually sold it on Ebay for £800(!) it needed around £500 of work which doesn't seem a lot but consider I had a Nissan Almera before hand that had a spooky ability to pass every MOT for four years with only consumables required and the car after it, a Seat Leon Cupra Mk1 180 was more powerful, about as fast, way more reliable and did more MPG despite having a smaller tank. Now I'm in a much better position I'm kind of sad I sold it, but it wasn't particularly reliable and certainly wasn't economical despite the 6 gears. 70mph in 6th was somewhere around 3,200RPM I seem to remember and you'd struggle to beat 30MPG across a tank, even on a long run. And the legend that French cars had dodgy electrics was proven entirely true in that car!

Don't let me put anyone off though, they're only going one way in price and there can't be that many left. If you're handy with spanners and have access to a Lift There's not a huge amount you couldn't do, just remember cambelts are 3 years or 36,000 miles (most people changed them at 2.5 years and 30,000 miles, just to be safe as failure will completely wreck the engine beyond economical repair) and if you hear any tapping from the top of the engine the timing is out and the belts haven't been done properly and I'd recommend you walk away. It'll tap forever unless you rebuild the top end.

Is a sorted one more fun to drive than a 1.9 GTI? I think it might be, more forgiving so you can taking greater liberties with it

A great car, I was fortunate enough to experience both the GTi-6 and the Rallye, both mental in their own rights. I'd go with the GTi-6 everytime.

I'm surprised at the the price when new for these, £17,250 in 1996 feels like more than I would have expected them to cost.

That is a great buy for the money, given today's prices on other things. Should've bought one when I had the chance, back in early 2000's, one of the few hot hatches that I have a real want to own. Rare things to find over here now. As others have said, not to be judged by their on-paper performance, the ride/handling combo was Peugeot doing what it did best.

Good cars back in the day. Obviously not as fast as modern stuff, but in its day a quick hot hatch. A friend supercharged his one and it went even better 😁

This was my dream car after I passed my test, all tests at the time raved about fantastic steering and chassis set up, and I loved the simple looks. Prohibitively expensive insurance stopped me buying one back then.

Now I am older, I have scratched the hot hatch itch again with Yaris GR.

So many fond memories of a 306 - its ride and handling was fabulous especially compared to today's bone hard riding preferences. I had a dTurbo which had its own boosty charms, but a phase 1 2.0 xsi or one of these would be a fine stablemate for the current fleet. Even the convertible version was an elegant looking thing.

As an aside, part of the reason I've got an Alpine A110 on order is very much related to getting back into something contemporary with a similarly magical ride and handling mix.

Hmm, not sure one PH scribbler found it too forgiving

The ‘playfulness at the rear’ is what makes them fun to some and catches others out and many recounted similar tales

As I recall, Terminator X warned him when he picked it up in the purchase thread

205GTi, 309GTi, 405Mi16, 106GTi. 306GTi-6, the last great Peugeot?
Modern 308GTi seems a good and underrated car but PSA’s golden age has long gone.
Buy it quick before I do!

Years ago, as a young Peugeot sales exec, I was tasked with collecting an 806 (MPV) demo from Ryton. I was booked on leave for a week and planned to spend it with my folks in North Wales, a 4 hour drive from where I lived. To get to Ryton I was issued with a 200,000-mile 405 Diesel Estate which was to be left there on the Friday.

I spent a couple of days with my folks, then set off at 5am on Friday to collect the 806. This was duly delivered to the dealership mid afternoon, where - to my surprise - I was presented with my new demo: a brand new Diablo Red 306 GTI-6.

This was, ummm... "run in" on the drive back to North Wales, spent the weekend following the Welsh Rally and was, ummm... "extended throughout its operating range" across the Denbigh Moors. My brother was in the passenger seat. He was more familiar with Series Land Rovers and couldn't quite get his head around the cornering speeds this thing could generate, even in my novice hands.

Sadly it got sold on quite quickly, to an army captain who traded in a TVR S3.

These are very rare now - with most having succumbed to rust, track days or going backwards into a hedge.

£4,500 is quite a lot of cash for one of these (considering they used to be £1000 not long ago), but prices are only going to go up as they get even more difficult to find!

This example appears to be on Pirelli P6000s, which don't have the best reputation - hopefully the new buyer will fit some good tyres.

Had two of these back in the day - both in Blaze Yellow.

Great fun and would easily have coped with another 30bhp or so.

If only I could get away with another car on the driveway hehe

The car I wanted so badly, but could quite afford (Young'uns on PCP deals don't know how lucky they are these days)

So I ended up buying it's baby brother. The 106 GTI. To this day, the most fun car I've ever owned.

Peugeot really were on top of their game back then.
