Integra positioned for comeback

Acura confirms iconic nameplate is making a return; the campaign for a UK car starts now...

Certain enthusiast cars need very little said about them to garner a great deal of excitement. The Honda Integra Type R is undoubtedly one of those. Tell the right person you drive a DC2 or a DC5 - or even just 'Teg, in some cases - and their interest will be immediately piqued. Soon you'll be discussing the merits of B18 vs. K20, JDM vs. UKDM, five gears versus six and so on. Nobody else will be around, but you'll have a friend for life.

Such is the reputation of both generations of Type R that confirmation of a new Integra - albeit only from Acura for the moment - is very exciting news. There's very little to go on for the moment, presumably as Acura knows full well that just dropping the name is enough for the world to look up. "A legend returns", reads the press material, noting that it's now 35 years since the Acura brand launched - with an Integra part of the original two-car line up.

"I'm thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura line-up with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way - design, performance and the overall driving experience", said John Ikeda, Acura VP and Brand Officer. Though a 2022 introduction has been announced, very little else has for the moment.

One to keep an eye on then, for certain. Coupes have fallen somewhat by the wayside of late, so it's great to hear that an iconic name is set to return. Let's hope Toyota's lead with the GR 86 - rather than Nissan's with the 400Z - can be followed and the Integra finds its way to Europe in time. Even 20 years since the last one, that badge still has quite the following.

Wonder what we're going to get, and how sporting ? Hybrid ? SH-AWD with hybrid to provide the AWD ? Can't imagine its going to be pure ICE, but that would be nice. Manual (please !) ? Will it come to the UK ?

At one time it was going to be a supercharged 4wd car but then arrived as a DC2

So we have Countach and Integra. What next, the Orion and Cavalier?

I seem to remember that other markets had boring Integras, they weren't all Type-Rs.

Could be a Civic based coupe, perhaps including the Civic Type-R drivetrain.

Or, could be a hybrid SUV. Hard to guess these days.

Someone I know had an Integra in the US. It wasn't a Type-R just a sporty looking front wheel drive Honda.

Has Honda got a "coupe" SUV on its books at the moment?

Had two of the real things.

- A 1999 Milano Red UK DC2
- A 2001 Championship White UK DC2

The first one was my first performance car and I dearly loved it, especially as I was living in Scotland at the time and could make use of it. I was 21 when I got it. The 2nd I was 27 when I got it as I had to downgrade from a Z4M to buy a house. That one, I didn't fall back in love in the same way. Living in the South East, being a "grown up" driving to the office every day at 7am, it started to grate. They are a car for a time and place.

Still, as far as FWD go, I haven't driven better. Use the diff to your advantage.

Long as they dont do a Ford and release it as an SUV as they did with the Puma!

Id DEF be up for this if it was a coupe after having a DC2 many many years ago.

What we want it to be is an FK8 coupe.

What it will probably be is an EV crossover.

I know it's Acura who have done the press release, but Honda have proven recently that they've still got the engineering bias in their ranks (double wishbone suspension on the back of the Honda e) to make this new Integra amazing.

I hope its all electric to be honest. I think leaving the DC2 and DC5 and their fantastic engines should be left in the past, and that they move the game on and develop something which showcases what can be done with electric power.

I don't think Acura or Honda are heathen enough to bring the Integra back as an SUV, crossover etc. I sincerely hope not, anyway.

I've fond, albeit brief memories of my DC2 and I hope in some way, they manage to bring back some of that car's magic.

Type R in vivid blue pearl for me please. I’d be over the moon if it drove (nearly) as well as the original and even if it was turbo charged. On the quiet i’d be bloody pleased too if it was more refined on longer journeys.
Do i need to hand in my Pistonheads membership after that last confession?

Excited for the return of the Integra but equally apprehensive that it might not quite live up to everyones expectations in styling and design judging by the new versions of the NSX and the Civic Type R.

I'm guessing we might expect it to be Hybrid or Turbo of some sort but I'm also hoping that Honda can take a leaf out of Toyotas book and deliver something special like the GR Yaris with their Type R version.

Acura???

Sounds a lot like this will be a Honda-US styled and engineered for the US market. No Japanese-ness, just like the NSX.

Not really - at the time I remember it as a mundane 1.5 5 dr hatch with a wedge nose so anything was a bit more exciting

I’d happily have a DC2 or DC5 if I had more car storage space indoors

It will be a mild-hybrid SUV/Crossover, with a few styling nods to the original car (white paint, red seats, crinkle finish paint on the cam cover).

All manufacturers know, that if you release anything other than an SUV/Crossover these days, it just wont sell (I mean, be leased).

I'm honestly amazed Ford haven't announced the re-release of the 'Escort' yet!!
