Simple question I guess

I was looking at a older 2008/9 diesel Touran to take our dogs around on the touran forum and suddenly I got hit with loads of people telling me I was a fool looking at a diesel as its going to cost me an extra £5k a year within the next few years

When I asked no-one could tell me why but are they correct

I will only be buying a sub £2k touran as a runaround but if they are correct and its going to cost me a couple of grand extra per year to run I will think twice

I've not heard anything about this but maybe my ear hasn't been to the ground enough !

p.s. it will only be taking the dogs for walks or uk holidays not driving into city everyday

cheers

most likely ULEZ's. Of course if you don't take your car into town, you don't have to worry about it.

£5k a year? Sounds like nonsense to me and we have 2 diesel cars that cost buttons to run.

What is the associated costs that have been pushed towards this 5k figure.
The only thing I've seen to rise recently has been the tax on older diesel cars and fuel. Other than that and if ULEZ applies to the city you live near. I cant see diesel costing anywhere near that if im honest

Perhaps more of a concern with diesels of that age is the increasing complexity such as DPFs required to meet the tightening emissions regulations from Euro 5 and onward as well as the shift toward extended service intervals and how hard any of the consequences of that is going to bite you in the arse when it goes wrong.

If you did say 20,000 miles a year, it might cost around £5k a year to run (if nothing on it breaks) on fuel and servicing.

If you live in a LEZ, it will cost you £12.50 every day you want to use the car, so a maximum of around £4500 a year. If you don’t ever go in a LEZ, then the cost will be £0.

I think a more valid point that has been raised is if you are only using this old diesel car for short journeys, the DPF on it will quickly get knackered and it’ll cost you around £2000 for a replacement.

Better to get a pre-2006 model Touran with no DPF to go wrong.

Edit: also avoid the DSG gearboxes on these

Thanks a lot for all your advice

I should have said I am going for a NON DPF model

Apparently its not just 2006 or earlier, some of the models even up to 2009 dont have a DPF

Is there a simple way either via registration or otherwise that I can know whether a used touran has a DPF or not

The models seem to vary form 2004 to 2009 some have some dont

When I speak to the owners most of them dont know themselves and I am not a mechanic

Maybe the exact year/model/ chassis number ?

Thanks

It's scaremongering you seem to know what you're buying, I wouldn't worry about it.

We have a 2005 Touran 2.0tdi in the family with around 700k kms on the clock. Probably more as it’s probably had a haircut at some point. It’s rotten. It stinks. It smokes like a bd. Apart from a new clutch and dmf and some injectors it’s been utterly bulletproof. Not bad to drive either.

Not being funny, but if you are looking at spending less than £2K on a runaround, then I wouldn't be too worried about what it might cost in "a few years".

At that price point, if you can get a car you can use for the next 2 or 3 years, that would average to (say) £700/year or £65/month capital cost over that time.

Can't imagine a Touran under £2K now will be worth much more than £500 in 2 or 3 years time. Even if you get a couple of years out of it and sell it for £250 scrap you'll still have had a very cheap car for 2 years.

Apologies if I'm reading your post wrongly.

Personally I would spend less and try to get an older 1.9tdi touran with more miles (means the dmf has probably been done) and then run into the ground provided the rust can be kept at bay. The 1.9tdi pd engine is far better than the 2.0 that replaced it. If it’s a dog car then future value is irrelevant in any case. If you spend a grand. Keep it 4 years @£250 a year not accounting for brakes and tyres and general wear and tear it makes for pretty frugal motoring.

Yes try and get a 1.9 - I think the very last ones had dpfs. With regular oil changes good for 300k miles. The Octavia estate would make a good pooch wagon too.
