Hi Folks

I want to get 2 trees trimmed which are in my back garden and have a preservation order.

However, I need to apply to the local council in order to do that. I invited a tree surgeon to have a look at the trees a few days ago, who offered to fill in the application form and says that would cost £150. He went on to say that it is vital to get the wording correct on the application, or else it would be rejected.

Has anyone any experience of this? Shall I complete the application myself and see what happens, or do you think it would be worthwhile spending the £150 and asking the tree surgeon to complete the application?

Thank You

Just put in a planning application it's free. Done online. You can also ask the tree preservation officer to call round and show them what you want to do. Look up previous applications on Council planning site for wording but it's usually along the lines of raising the canopy, trimming back new growth etc.

£150 is quite a lot, even in the rip off South East I think my tree surgeon charged £60.

Have a look at a few other requests that people have submitted on the planning portal and use those as a guide.

Yes I've done this myself, it's just an online form submitted for free. I did get the council person round to have a look first, asked them what to put on the form, then filled it in and it was approved straight away. Save your money and do it yourself, it's a piece of cake.

You've reminded me that it was almost 2 years ago (I'm not allowed another application for 2 years after the previous one) and they could do with another wee trim, so it's nearly time to put in a repeat application.

The work that you are applying for needs to be in line with BS3998: 2010 Tree Work Recommendations and you need to state the reason for that work.

If you want me to look over it your application, I’d be happy to.
