A friend of mine recently got rid of his work van. After it being broke into. He got around £2000 for it. Plus all the hassle of sorting it out. He has decided to look at getting a car rather than another van. He is after an Estate or something with a large boot.

He is in a bit of a dilemma so I thought I would get some advice from people on here. Do you think he is better buying something for say £1000 - £2000. Or look at financing something for £6-8k?

It depends on his situation really. Can he pay 2 grand outright or pay say 150£ monthly?

Saab 9-5 estate would fit the criteria for the boot size or a Volvo V70. You can pick both up for 2 grand or under

He said that he could pay £2000 outright and buy something. But he would have to be careful he doesn’t buy a lemon. Which ends up costing a lot to maintain and fix. Which does tend to happen at the cheap end of the market.

I suppose the other way to look at it finance something and then you always have some spare cash available should anything major come up.

If he has something on finance & he has an unexpected bill then he'll still have to find the money for the repair & the monthly payment.

I'd tell your friend to look for an MPV you'll get a decent one for sensible money, tint the rear windows & it'll be a good alternative to a van.

Thanks for the suggestions on an MPV. He’s not that keen unfortunately. He thought about getting a Volvo V70 D5. It seems a pretty good choice. Any help or advice on them.

If the engine cover is black it’s euro 3 non dpf model, if it has a silver one than it has DPF. They’re heavy cars and tend to chew through front suspension and engine mounts. Seats are probably one of the most comfortable ones biggrin

What does he need from a work van?

What are the implications of him missing a day of work because of unexpected breakdown?

What are the implications if the vehicle is in the garage for a week being repaired?

How much damage is he likely to cause to the vehicle?

If the answers are light duties, big issue, big issue and not much, then I'd be looking at a lease. Otherwise it's probably going to cost more in repairs and lost work.

In his van he had the usual power tools, hand tool, step ladders and some extension ladders on the roof. If it breaks down then he will miss a days work. But that can be said for any vehicle. If it needs to be repaired for a period of time he can ask to be collected by one of his colleagues.

He though about a lease but doesn’t really fancy it.

A V70 D5 for that money will be well used, I'd suggest your friend look at Signums etc.

I was gonna also say Volvo XC70 (D5 obviously), but as suggested they are getting pretty pricey.

He was looking at a few:

My only concern is the high mileage and I know some of the parts can be expensive. Ive not seen a Vauxhall Signum before. Are they any good?

Thanks I will show him those. Thats the very top of his budget £3500. Ideally he wants to stick to £2000. Then just have some left ofter so that if something does come up he has some spare cash.

In that case the Laguna is the pick, he'll have to haggle but he should get very close to his 2k.

Aren’t Berlingos the way to go at the minute for people replacing vans? Well within budget as well

I will show him. He’s never had a French car so I don’t know what they are like in terms of reliability and servicing etc.

He’s spotted the Honda and SAAB. He’s never owned either manufacturer. Any advice on those two?

The Honda will be bulletproof, especially with that engine.
With the Saab you need to get the oil pick up seal replaced and it should be fine smile.
