Ford GT production ends with new LM Edition

Final 20 cars honour 2016 Le Mans win, including a dashboard of ground-up crankshaft...

This is it, then. After half a dozen years of production and more special editions than it’s healthy to mention, the final Ford GTs will be made very soon. As has become tradition for Ford’s V6 supercar over the past few years, this new LM Edition pays homage to some race in France you might have heard of called Le Mans.

Instead of reliving 60s’ glories, however, the LM Edition commemorates a more recent win, specifically the 2016 triumph where Ford beat Ferrari once more (and took a first, third and fourth in the LMGTE Pro). You might remember that red and blue livery, so this LM Edition will give the 20 customers a choice between either red or blue-tinted carbon details against the Liquid Silver paint.

The colour extends inside, too, with Alcantara for the driver’s seat that matches the choice outside. And all 20 LM Editions will get a 3D-printed badge made from the crankshaft of the third-placed GT. Yep, that's right: the #69 car from 2016 was disassembled, and now the crank has been ground into a powder for this LM Edition plaque, to “embed the Le Mans podium-finishing spirit into each road car.”

Though mechanically standard, with the same 660hp, twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 as every other GT, this final limited edition does benefit from a 3D-printed titanium exhaust. Look closely and you’ll see a GT LM badge manufactured using the same method.

“With innovative materials, design and engineering, the Ford GT is unlike any other production supercar,” said Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance Motorsports global director. “As we close this chapter of the road-going Ford GT, the GT LM Edition gave us a chance to inject even more heart and soul from a podium-finishing racecar, furthering the tribute to our 2016 Le Mans win.”

Ford says the deliveries of the LM will begin later in the autumn, and production will absolutely end by the time 2023 is here. Which we’ll believe when we see it, frankly, given we’ve had everything from the Alan Mann Heritage Edition to the Holman Moody Heritage Edition up to this point. Don’t rule out another limited one until that last GT is made. And then we can think about what an electrified Ford GT might be like…

I think I'd pay for two red seats so I don't look like a tt.

I've never ever seen one on the road, only a couple at car shows.
And...you can't buy 'em it seems as they're never on sale. I heard only 12 came to the UK?

I think the issue was that in basic terms they sold the whole production run, before they were built.

I really like this edition, sadly will be parked in collections and never driven

A friend's dad literally owned a Ford dealership when the 'original' GT came out and they snubbed him!

It's much simpler to call it grey than "liquid silver " .

6 years to make them all , was only one bloke making them , by hand , part time ? biggrin

1350 cars planned apparently

Damn, I didn't know they were still making them. Amazing car when launched, but surely this would be trounced by any more contemporary/current competitor.

From Wiki: Production began in December 2016 and is scheduled to continue through 2022, with a planned production rate of one car per day at Multimatic's low-volume assembly facility in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Approximately two hundred 2017 and 2018 year production cars were recalled to fix potential hydraulic leaking and fire risk. The cars produced for the 2017 and 2018 model years are allocated through Ford Performance's vehicle allocation process. The cars produced for the 2019 model year were primarily for buyers unsuccessful in the initial selection process, and the cars produced for the 2020 model year are for new customers.

Special editions
There have been number of special edition series for the new GT, often involving unique liveries, materials, or interior changes. These special editions include:

Competition Series (2017–2018): The closest one can get to the car that won the 2016 Le Mans, with all optional carbon fiber parts fitted, with interior weight savings from deletion of A/C, radio hardware, and storage bins.
'66 Heritage Edition (2017): Matte or metallic black paint with #2 graphics to honor the winning GT40 Mk II at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.
'67 Heritage Edition (2018): Race red paint with #1 graphics to honor the winning GT40 Mk IV at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans.
'68–'69 Heritage Edition (2019–2020): Blue and orange Gulf Oil livery with #9 (2019) or #6 (2020) graphics to honor the back to back wins at the 1968 and 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans by the GT40 Mk I.
Liquid Carbon (2020): Exposed carbon fiber body and wheels for the 2020 model year, at an increased price of US$750,000.
'66 Heritage Edition (2021): White, red, and carbon exterior with #98 graphics to honor the GT40 Mk II's win at the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona.
'64 Heritage Edition (2022): White with black accents to mimic the livery of the sole remaining GT40 prototype car, the 1964 GT/105.
Alan Mann Heritage Edition (2022): Signature Alan Mann Racing livery in red and gold to tribute to Alan Mann Racing's 1966 Ford GT lightweight experimental prototypes.
Holman Moody Heritage Edition (2022): Gold and red livery to honor the podium-placing Holman Moody GT40 Mk II, chassis no. P/1016.
LM Edition (2022): Painted in Liquid Silver with a choice of either red or blue accents, as tribute to the 2016 Le Mans-winning GT, which wore a red and blue livery.

Well that's a bit rubbish if they own the one that won. "In the spirit of competition, we have imbued this car with the spirit of ... the one that didn't even mange second. Not even the best loser. Probably barely scraped a podium."

Reminds me of my favourite Family Guy quote.
"You know, I didn't have to get you anything at all!"
"It's almost like you didn't."

Typical Ford: They make a car that actually performs and then hardly sell any - in this case only to a select few. Though a critical view of the GT shows it to be an F-150 powered kit car. The 2004 to 2006 car was, however, something different and good.

Another wonderful reminder of Ford cheating at Le Mans!
Homologation?! We don't need no stinking homologation!
What do you mean it's a purpose built racer and not based on a regular production model like a 911 or Corvette or 488?
What do you mean we were sandbagging all the way to qualy and given the largest BoP change and still won the race easily?
What do you mean we were outside the 7% threshold for class performance?
What do you mean years later we got busted for cheating with over large fuel tanks?
What do you mean it was only a class win anyway?! We won Le Mans! Wohoo!

Congrats Ford, amazing achievement!

They real did this,I was there with a friend looking forward to watching the race that didn’t happen and as a fan they did not win and for this reason this special edition should come with…..
Sand bags instead of seats to remind everyone what cheating …… they are.

Still a fantastic looking car, even a few years later. They haven't half milked the special editions though!

Have you ever watched motorsport before? It's basically an exercise in who can cheat and get away with it.
