Alfa Stelvio and Giulia updated for 2023

Tonale-esque new look and revised spec for Alfa's dynamic duo

Last April, Stellantis confirmed that the Giorgio platform which underpins both Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia would be culled. The architecture wasn’t built for electrification, rendering it almost unworkable in the years to come. This means there can’t be long left to buy either the saloon or SUV, given the former was launched in 2015 and the latter followed the year after. To make them more appealing than ever (likely for the final time), Alfa has updated the Giulia and Stelvio ranges for 2023.

A fresh look is the biggest change, both cars adopting the 3+3 light style seen on the Tonale (itself paying homage to the SZ). There’s more to it than meets the eye, too, with adaptive matrix LEDs standard, welcome and goodbye lights and segmented high beam included in the new look. The Trilobo grille has been reworked ‘in a contemporary style’.

Inside, there’s a new digital dash for both models, the 12.3-inch TFT screen configurable through Evolved, Relax and Heritage displays, the latter notable for its retro look intended to evoke the iconic models of the 60s and 70s. From here, it looks as if another set of stylish analogue dials has been lost to yet another screen, but there we are. Following the Tonale, the new Giulia and Stelvio get Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) tech, essentially ensuring the vehicle’s data - service history, most notably - can’t be meddled with.

Though mechanically unchanged, with the same range of four-cylinder petrol and diesels, the eight-speed auto and Alfa Link suspension, the trim levels of both Giulia and Stelvio have been tweaked. Again it mirrors the strategy employed for the Tonale - ‘to make the customer’s configuration of the vehicle as simple as possible’, says Alfa - and comprises Sprint and Veloce specs.

For 2023, the Giulia will be exclusively available with the 280hp 2.0-litre petrol, with the Stelvio adding the option of a 210hp diesel. A new Competizione model now sits at the top of the range, too, based on the Veloce and identified by the Moon Light paint, Competizione badges and red brake calipers. Inside, it gets red stitching, a leather dash and upgraded Harmon Kardon audio. Alfa insists the new models are the ‘ultimate expression of performance and style’.

But surely that’s the Quadrifoglio, right? Well, worry not - Alfa UK has confirmed to us that the 510hp variant of both cars will receive a similar update, it'll just come a little later. Expect to hear more details on that before too long. As for the rest of the lineup, expect to see facelifted cars in the UK come the first quarter of next year.

Still the best looking in their respective classes IMO and the front-end update works well; was always perplexing how both models only offered halogen or xenon lights at a time when even small hatchback white goods had moved to LED setups as standard.

ETA having just looked at them again, the new light design does have a touch of previous-gen 3 series about it.

Anything that evokes the SZ is a good thing. I’ve had two Giulias (and an SZ) and am currently waiting for a new SZ-inspired Ioniq 5 to arrive. However I might have to revisit Alfa’s offerings in light of this refresh.

Give me the options of (a) tan leather and (b) silver wheels in/on the Giulia QF and I'll buy one. Until then, it's a no.

This occurred to me too. Was this the last car available with xenons? Are they now extinct? I'll start a thread!

Agree on this completely, missing a truck to differentiate from true Germans on the interior front

Couldn’t you just get tan interior and then get the wheels painted silver/buy some and fit them yourself if it was something so minor stopping you buy one?

I agree, I really like both. They deserve to sell more of these over their competitors.

Glad that it is staying around.

I'm surprised they bother with the Giulia, when the Stelvio sold so much better.

Surely silver wheels are a super easy change to make?

Tan interior tougher of course.

Will probably get another to replace mine, unless lotus get a move on with the 133, but the lights don't look as good as i hoped or was told! that color in the pics doesn't help.

All a bit meh TBH, but in the right colour will look ok.

Loved my Giulia when I had it. Hopefully they bring back some more colour options, both external and internal. The current configurator is a sad state of affairs.

It does, the old Xenon front headlamps made it look dated, this is much better.

By the way, saw a Mito last week and thought and it still looked very good. A car from 2008 no less.

They used to offer tan interior - I spec’d one up a few years ago, blue on tan with the signature Alfa alloys in silver. But i needed an estate so never went ahead.

Current configurator looks lacking, but I guess that’s because the car doesn’t have long to live. I thought they offered a range of funky colours like that velvet green and deep gold, guess that’s only for the quads.

I like this train of thought. Without research I know the boggo spec Mazda 2 still has Xenons. Any others?

Agreed. One of very few good-looking cars still in production.
