640d - Buying tips?
Discussion
Hi all
Have changed my previous search criteria and now seriously considering a 640d in either GC or coupe form. The 2015ish models are quite cheap now and worth considering imo.
Can anyone shed some advice on what to look for on these? Along with some advice on spec/key changes over the years. I know the early cars had some annoying issues like seat rattles, but what about 2015 onward cars?
I’d ideally want one with as many options as possible, but not sure what the sweet spot is for these.
Also seems like the late F10/early G30 530d’s are also within budget scope. Are these a better option?
Also in London, so needs to be euro6
Thanks in advance.

ive had mine a year now.
- no issues with mine (currently) , 1st MOT due in a week.
- car is massive - overhangs most car spaces
- RFTS are annoying, have lowered PSI to 32 ish and its made a big difference
- you can feel the weight and size when cornering and driving
- i get with mixed diving 400 / 450 miles a tank - motorway only, 600 / 650 ish
wish i got the 650 now as my mileage is alot lower than expected.
overall for the money i dont think there is much better though

I'm bias as I have one but for me the E350cdi Coupe in AMG Line Premium spec is the pick, when you drop all the windows away & open up the roof, they're a great place to be.Have changed my previous search criteria and now seriously considering a 640d in either GC or coupe form. I have to agree - I've had my E350 Coupe about six months, I'm so glad I chose it over a 640D, not least because the engine is amazing. They don't really seem to go wrong, either, apart from NOX sensors on anblu cars https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202306258...

I love these as well, but I know myself and I’d always regret not buying the newer shape with the better infotainment/ambient lighting and all. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202306258...

Otherwise I would go for one of these without a doubt.

Had one for a year, wouldn't have another. Live in London too.
As mentioned, it's absolute massive. Too big for the city.
It handles fine, but you feel every kg of that weight, it feels heavy and in corners that weight affects handling a lot. Steering feel is none existent, it's so light. Its drives a lot like a boat.
The engine is great for cruising or on faster roads, not great for stop start London traffic. Get the petrol, as it's better suited for low gear urban cruising, the diesel seems unsettled as it revs to 2.5k-3.5k too much in the city, and in manual its a bit gutless/laggy below 2k so you're forced to let the auto behave like this.

I did 70k miles in one and I echo everything you have said here. It handles fine, but you feel every kg of that weight, it feels heavy and in corners that weight affects handling a lot. Steering feel is none existent, it's so light. Its drives a lot like a boat.

I bought a BMW 640d a few months ago and I love it. I did consider an E350 but because my budget stopped short of the new shape I decided against it. The version before the new shape seemed date and less quality than the 640 so I went for the BMW. The BMW is also over 300 bhp where as the E350 is circa 250 bhp. Mine is a 13 plate and not highly specced but with BMW as you go up the numbers they get more luxurious and the 640 definitely reflects that and is beautiful inside.
It is a big car, but that does mean you can use the rear seats and the boot is also usable. I love the huge bonnet! I was surprised how fast it is, put your foot down and you are shoved into the back of your seat, it is very fast for a big car and reaches 100mph before you realise it. I use mine as a motorway cruiser, and even going along at 70mph, put your foot down and you are overtaking with ease. As expected from a big car its not great at cornering, although a lowering kit would help this a little. I have had nothing go wrong so far, just an AC regas.

I loved the way mine looked in Deep Sea Blue and the Ivory White leather, and they are great looking cars I think. They are great cars for overtaking I agree, although the performance does drop off at 100mph plus though for me. It did 40mpg over 70k miles which I thought was really good for the performance. I've had mine for about 2 years now.
No issues other than regular servicing. I do mainly motorway miles and it will return around 43mpg sat at 75mph.
Interior is leaps and bounds ahead of the 3/4 series in terms of material quality and design. It's a big step up all round really (previously had a 335i).
Not too many on the road, consistently get positive comments from people about how it looks.
I have a black one with the 20" wheels also in black (came standard with the m sport plus pack) with the Vermillion interior which for me is a great colour combo.
I'd definitely recommend one that has the comfort seat option rather than the standard seats, much more adjustability and super comfy.
Reversing camera is a must! It's actually longer (slightly) than a full fat range rover of the same era.
HK sound (which mine has) or even the B&O is also a must have IMO.
Decent power and it's quicker than the Merc E350.
Boot is massive, it is plenty spacious enough for my 3 kids in the back on long trips.
Cabin doesn't feel at all clostraphobic to me, passenger sits far away and plenty adjustment for steering wheel and seat.
I can't think what else to replace it with apart from an M6 GC. I do like the 8 GC but sometimes can't unsee the side profile of the car being extremely similar to a Kia Stinger
Edited to add:
Almost forgot. Get rid of the run flat tyres if you end up in one. Improves the ride and handling massively. PS4s transformed the car.
