Evening. A couple of years ago I managed to track down my first car with the help of the owners Club Facebook page. It is a 1989 205 1.9 GTi which I sold around 22 years ago. I've always wanted the F registration from it for my current vehicle and the current owner kindly agreed to sell it to me given it's sentimental value. The vehicle became a track car and has currently been off the road for a number of years, more than 5 I believe, so last time we both checked we faced the issue that if a vehicle has been SORN, which it is, for more than 5 years it needs tax and an MOT to be able to transfer the plate. This appears unnecessarily prohibitive given there was no way around it even in legitimate circumstances but it is the rules. The owner has experience restoring cars and agreed to bring the car back up to condition that would allow it to be taxed and MOT'd, but this is a lot of work given it was a track car with some damage, and some non-car-related issues has caused this to be a difficult challenge for the current owner. He messaged today to say he had heard the rules had changed as an associate of his had bought a car that was SORN and transferred the reg to a different car. Does anybody know if the rules have changed recently so that this could become possible without the 205 having to be taxed and tested if it has been SORN for more than 5 years? I can't find anything online to suggest it has changed but you knowledgeable folk may know different, or be able to point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

Looks okay. That's on the DVLA website.

Thanks Dicky, I saw that on the DVLA website. Still seems that if it's been SORN for more than five years it needs tax and MOT, which is proving to be the tricky part.

After doing some deeper research it does seem as if it's still the rule of if it's been SORN and no MOT for more than 5 years it needs both to transfer the reg off to another car. It's been SORN for 10 years so that's the issue. Seems like if it's a legitimate situation (I want the reg as it was my first car and owner is willing to sell it to me) it's seems a bit unnecessary to make it so hard if the donor car is ££££ away from an MOT and thus tax...

How far off being MOTable would you say it is?

Maybe say you'll pay the £50 to have a test done and find out? It could be not too awful.
