Two drain covers on our drive got popped by a skip lorry driving over them.

No bother I thought, I will just get a local plumber to replace them.

I've just been quoted a grand plus VAT! Is that normal?

I appreciate you have to replace the frame not just the cover and in this case the frame is in tarmac but a grand. Surely it's less than a days work for one person. The covers themselves look like they are £70.

What is the going rate for one of these things?

I think your issue here is asking a plumber. A general handyman is what you need. Or just mix up a bit of mortar and DIY.

Find out whether the drains are only for your property or are shared with next door / someone else. If they are shared, the water company will repair it FOC (ive had one done in my front garden)

If it's a case of a grand to me, then this may well be the plan.

Just make sure you get a heavy duty one - normally £130+

I had a similar issue.
I bought and collected a heavy duty replacement for around £120 and had a local landscape/gardener type remove the old frame and concrete the new in one for £100 cash. Took him no time at all.

You need a general builder or a ground worker for a manhole, not a plumber.

So that price is probably a ‘I don’t want the job, but… ‘ b type price.
