I know motorway services charge a premium for fuel prices but BP at Stirling are truly extracting the urine, 183p/litre which is a good 25p more expensive than prices in general.

Motorway services always are expensive. Don't use them. I'm not far from Kinross Services on the M90, which is always expensive. But a few miles up the A977 is one of the cheapest garages around (Shell). Unless you are really desperate to fill up or in a real hurry, it's never far to go to find an alternative local station and with the internet it's not like they are hard to find.

Sainsbury's or Tesco's in Stirling isn't much of a diversion to avoid the motorway services and they'll have a much better and cheaper range of snacks.

I had to use the M11 services on Sunday. £1.77 / litre whilst my local was £1.47 / litre. I put in just enough to get me to my local place so they effectively lost out because no way was I going to tank up. I wholly understand that motorway services are going to be pricey because they're convenient but an extra 30p/litre is one hell of a markup!

Forecourt near me petrol is £1.47, half mile away and next to the motorway slip road (so not actually motorway services) and they're charging £1.74 for petrol.

It's the same all over the EU and has been for decades.

Get off the main roads and it's cheaper.

The only time I've ever seen motorway services fuel at a 'cheap' price was Frankley on the M5 during the first COVID lockdown in 2020. It wasn't as cheap as the supermarkets but was cheaper than some garages, specifically the robdogs on the Hagley Rd (A449) in Oldswinford, nr. Stourbridge.

There were 3 all charging almost exactly the same price, all about 10p per litre more others only 1 - 2 miles away. Captive audience on an A road, and it showed me how many fill up without even looking. frown I think the newly rebuilt M+S franchise garage in 2022 broke the cartel and they're more competitive now, but still pricey for the area.

Frankly Services on the M5 is generally only 5 - 8p litre more than the Asda at Junction 2 M5. I sometimes top up there as it's much less hassle then getting off on and back on J2 ... also the Asda pumps have to be the slowest dispensers I've ever tried.

I'd imagine a lot of large users have fuel cards, so aren't paying the enormous premium.
The odd passer by is then a little bonus..

My old CEO saw it as a show of wealth to almost exclusively fill up at the motorway services near the office using the company fuel card. Between him, his brother and his dad they were spending £6k/month on the fuel card for their various cars. Even with 110 cars between and paying silly motorway prices them it still didn't make sense as they couldn't have driven the miles required each month!

I live in Aberdeen and spent the 20 months in my previous job driving from here to client sites in Stafford, Stoke on Trent or Nottingham. All motorway service stations are expensive but Stirling was the worst by a country mile. The client was paying for the fuel but I did always feel slightly guilty if I had to fill up there.

I’ve just been from somerset to Glasgow & back, fortunately our diesel qashqai will do the run each way on just over half a tank meaning we can avoid the motorway prices.

Only need to stop for a pee & a 5 quid costa/ Starbucks coffee.

Gloucester services used to give a fuel discount voucher if you spent money in the shop or restaurant, making it roughly on par with non-motorway fuel. I have no idea if they’re still doing so.

Surely with a fuel card you don't pay the pump price but instead a lower average price for fuel, it's been a long time since I had one but I'm sure that was the case.

It just shows how if you can be bothered to be prepared you can save a lot. Each car at home is currently full with fuel. Petrol ones fuelled at 139.7, diesel at 149.7 and the daily at 143.7. So I can leave and get home in most cars wihout spending on fuel until I get home. Worst case I may chuck £10 at a motorway services for a get you home splash and dash.

Same with drinks and snacks. 2 bottles of water at WHSmith in the services ~ £3.50. 12 bottles are £1.79 in Aldi. Same with snacks. It just boils down to how chaotic and lazy you are.

My sister simply doesn’t look at the cost of anything, if she wants it she pays. She is great for profit margins

A34 services, like the motorways takes the pish. Funny thing is at the moment, there are diversions at night that takes you off as you get closer to the M3 junction. The diversion takes you past "normal" petrol stations. And guess, what....they have put their prices up nearly the same as the A34 ones.
Everything about service stations is terrible.

Never get why someone would use Tamworth services, you have to come off the M42 anyway to use it, yet drive literally 2 minutes and 1/4 mile down the A5 and it's more than 20p a litre cheaper, both the same brands and filled from the same tanker route probably!

The A1 can vary a bit, but generally the prices are pretty good, hwoever I had a shock last week. The 'new' roundabout at Buckden the Shell garage was 1.71, yet the prices a few miless before and after were circa 1.47-1.49. These are all 'side of the A1 stations, not in a service area.

The roads in and out of Stirling Services are cratered like the first day of the Somme, BP might at least spring for a few buckets of tarmac out of their ill gotten gains.

I often stop there when I'm heading for the M6 (the view from the Northbound side is fantastic) but only noticed their relatively reasonable prices a year or two ago.

Filed it in the memory bank, although I always try to avoid buying fuel at Motorway services.
