Hi all,

I've been homeless for a while now and have been moving from shelter to shelter through the council for about two years, and have now been given a property/tenancy. I'm over the moon to be honest, and even doubly so as it appears to have a small garden. The only problem is, I don't know the area or boundaries of the garden. My housing officer gave me a gov. site and said i would find the boundaries there. I have typed in the property address and I can't see the boundaries of the garden. The address he gave me, takes you to a bunch of links that end up at the Scottish land registry service, but I still can't see the garden area, it's probably me being a dimwit. He also said, when you find the area and boundaries, can you take a picture and send it to me. That perplexed me I must admit, I would have thought the council had that information. Maybe I need to pay for this information?

I am particularly asking, as the area that I may have some access to, is covered in huge bushes (cherry laurel bushes) literally right up to the washing area, near twenty five foot high and larger across the horizontal. The surrounding gardens are clear. I would love to have the same as them, shed, small garden furniture or bench, but my area is totally overgrown.

I'll include some pictures, the pictures you'll see are the bushes, which he said would probably my area, and surrounding gardens. I'm probably being stupid here, but I can't find what site shows what belongs to what property.

Oh, I should add of course, my housing officer is off for the next few weeks, but my friend who has a landscape business has offered to clear some areas for me, I can't do that until I see what area belongs to the property, many thanks.

I haven't put the property address in, but am happy to give it out if that would help. I would appreciate any help if someone is familiar with this sort of thing.

Thank you.

Send us your address as a private message and I'll look it up. The Register of Scotland website is not great, sometimes the info the map gives is rubbish.

What a legend! Thank you very much Hide.

My apologies, I had to send as email as I couldn't see the function to send as a private message.
It looks like I've screwed up the image loading too. Doh!

Ah; just remembered I'm temporarily locked out of the email address my account is registered to because I'm terrible with passwords, so that won't work, sorry. Maybe if you post up the address for 10 minutes or so then delete it?

Congratulations on the house. I couldn’t see the photos so quoted them just in case others also couldn’t.

Thanks for that Hobo, I assume I got a tag wrong somewhere.

Things had really hit the skids and life comes at you fast, physically and mentally to be honest when you get older, but i just had to deal the hand I've been played. So was overjoyed to be offered a property, particularly with a small garden area. They really are at a premium now. I've also been offered a carpet for living room and bedroom, maybe even a cooker and a fridge. So I'm overjoyed to be honest.

Would love to sit in a garden at nighttime and hear the dusk chorus of the birds, things can be quite wild in these places I'm in....so...super happy! getmecoat
Piston heads changed the image hosting site recently and the transition hasn’t been totally smooth.

It’s good to hear that the system has worked for you even if it did take 2 bloody years. I’m not a local, but if I was I’d considered it tax money well spent. Good luck for your future and enjoy the garden.

Congrats on the new home - great news.

But the internet being what it is, perhaps best to remove the address from the thread I feel.

eta - just seen hidetheelephants last post smile

Yeh, it's not coming up; the register is a bit of a mess, it was supposed to be fully digitised over a decade ago but they aren't there yet and this is one of those missing records, perhaps it's been a council property since before 1979 when the register was started. If the garden of your flat is like that of 43C then you get the block of land to the side as I've outlined in red, but best to confirm it with the council before spending much effort on it. You also have the use of the drying green(outlined in yellow) at the back, but that's shared with the other 3 flats.

Thanks for that guys/gals

Particularly for your search on my behalf hide smile

I wondered if that area may be mine or at least have access to it HTE, but the person downstairs has commandeered the front and the side garden, and has actually gated it. It is what it is, I'll phone the council tomorrow, and hopefully even a small bit of the backs is mine, if not I'll get a chair. I really shouldn't have worked myself up into believing the back bit may be mine as downstairs had the front. At least i have somewhere to live now and a place i can call home.

Thanks again for all the replies, superstars!

As I say, the register website is quite flaky in this respect; some other flat listings in the same road say the upper flat gets a rectangular area at the back, so it's possible this is the case with you. Something like this in blue, but you'll hopefully get a more definitive statement from the council.

Okay, thanks for that HTE, very good of you! I'll contact the council tomorrow and relay the information I've read. I may even suggest I can clear out a small area myself for them, save them coming out...ahem. Hopefully the council guy then doesn't double check and I find that there's "no soup for you!" biglaugh

I still find it weird he asked me to send him a picture of the area that may be designated to the flat I've received. It may be as you say they are waiting on digitization and the old deeds? are warehoused.

I'll update the thread when I hear anything of interest, thanks again all smile

Even if it not technically yours but could be shared with the other flats, why not have a quick chat with the other residents, let them know what you’re thinking of doing and you can all use the space.

I live in a small estate which consists of nine blocks of low rise flats with communal gardens, there are times when people want some shrubs cutting back or a tree pruning as it getting close to the building, subject to TPOs, it generally gets done. Two years ago I scattered some foxglove seeds in an empty border, haven’t done anything to look after them, hopefully this year they should flower and attract some wildlife.

Yes, it is a lovely place to sit of an evening with a cold beer, maybe chatting to the neighbours or listening to music using earbuds so as not to disturb anyone else.

Congrats! I can't imagine what the last 2 years must have been like, but it must be a strange thing to be able to close your door to your own space and not be interrupted smile

That's a beaut of a garden. Can you speak to your neighbour, agree a partition line then initially sit a dwarf fence for a period until your both happy then increase?
