Stunning AGTZ Twin Tail breaks cover

All eyes are on Lake Como this weekend - and likely never far from Zagato's take on the Alpine A110

The AGTZ Twin Tail is not a car to be forgotten in a hurry. As if Zagato and La Squadra’s take on the '60s-era longtail Alpine A220 wasn’t dramatic enough, it offered the possibility of swapping the carbon rump for a shorttail option as well. Two Alpine homages in one, hence the name. All 19 customers would get both looks for their €650,000 plus taxes, offering something genuinely different in the coachbuilding sphere. Whether you liked the Twin Tail or not, it was nothing if not memorable.

Now the AGTZ is to be shown in real life and at full scale, the car making its public debut at FuoriConcorso this weekend, part of the wider Villa D’Este event. Arguably no better place to reveal a limited-run, very expensive, esoteric take on a modern sports car; La Squadra, the Polish supercar distributor behind the Twin Tail concept, has said that the order book is ‘filling fast’, so there is still a chance to get one. Every Twin Tail will spend 15 weeks at Zagato, with more than 1,000 hours put into each build. If the 19 colours and nine liveries available don’t cut the mustard, paint-to-sample is possible. Furthermore, if standard A110 running gear seems a little tame, there are (unspecified) upgrades on offer for the engine, suspension and brakes.

Despite the expanse of additional bodywork, carbon fibre ensures a kerbweight that ‘closely resembles’ the standard Alpine’s; that means a top speed of more than 155mph and 0-62mph in less than five seconds. Whether buyers will use the 4,305mm shorttail variant for ‘shorter circuits and rally stages’ and the 4,799mm bodystyle for high-speed aero runs remains to be seen; what’ll probably get plenty of showing off is the custom trolley that’s used to switch between rear ends and exhibit whichever one isn’t on the car.

Andrea Michele Zagato, President of Zagato, said of the Twin Tail: “Most importantly, this project exudes enjoyment. Our close-knit team, fuelled by underdog spirit, has crafted a remarkable homage to car culture. The distinctive abilities of La Squadra have combined with Zagato’s expertise to create AGTZ Twin Tail. I am thrilled by the outcome of our inaugural collaboration and by the swift progress of our team. Together we can push the boundaries of automotive design and I am confident other projects will unfold. We’ve made waves in the market and I expect many others will soon emulate our approach.”

Founder of La Squadra Jakub Pietrzak added that the project was aimed at people “looking for something more in automotive.” He continued: “I didn’t expect AGTZ Twin Tail to be understood by the masses, however we reached over 420 million people with the first reveal of our car in February and to almost entirely positive reactions, which doesn’t happen in the automotive world often.” Perhaps he didn’t read the PH comments, but plenty had something to say - and that might matter just as much.

This prototype, chassis 00, will be on static display this Saturday and Sunday on the shores of Lake Como. Which isn’t exactly convenient for anyone UK-based. However, the Twin Tail will be on display closer to home very soon; today’s press release confirms that the AGTZ will make a dynamic debut ‘in July at a headline automotive event’. And that doesn’t take too much working out. Certainly it’s going to look like nothing else going up the hill, whichever bodystyle is used. And if you’re lucky, there might still be one of the 19 left to buy…

Challenging on both looks and price.
But by all accounts it's sold out .
So probably another piece for the collection

Not for me! Looks very contrived, take a lovely lithe car and make it look heavy!

I don't think I've come across a single Zagato I prefer over the original design....!

Generally agree, but one possible exception is the Porsche 356 Zagato.

I'd take that over the original, no question.

Looks like one of those hideous solar-powered cars from years ago. Unpleasant.

Just because they can does that mean they should? And then there's the cost!
I just don't get it especially when something like a Dallara for example that's just as unique, is a third of the cost.
Of course, what do I really know as I can't afford either of them.

I like the front 3/4s but everything behind the door makes it look awkward and out of proportion.

Not for me (In know they'll be devastated to hear I won't be buying one rofl)

Doesn't matter how much money I might have, I'd never spend that much on an Alpine or on a car that looks like that.

I do sympathize with a company such as Zagato. They have employees who need to be paid every month. But they have, as far as I am aware, no steady business - they live or die by producing short run "specials". The market for these is at best fickle - produce too many and you risk flooding the market. But, with limited resource, you have to make something which is sufficiently different from the original model to justify people spending the considerable extra money. And there will be many "hard" points in the original which it is every expensive to design around. You can imagine the team Renault had designing the original in comparison to what Zagato can put on it. Not easy.

All that said, this is really poor. Suspect they are not going to sell out at all....

Nice. Not much wrong with the Aston DB4 GT Zagato either.

Zagato made/changed many cars, some are really lovely.

the one OT is not bad (although not a fan of that long tail car), but would not spend such money on that
