Hi all,

Is there a way to find the history of a licence plate?

In June 2021 my Aunt had an accident with a white Mercedes. The other driver is trying to take her to Court as his insurance wasn't covering it. In any case, I had a look at the pictures this evening and just for fun decided to perform an MOT / Road tax check of his licence plate on the DVLA site.

The result came back as a Blue Vauxhall Astra registered in January 2018 which still has a valid Tax / MOT today. A bit surprising considering it was on a Mercedes in 2021!

I am not sure whether it's a personalised number plate and there is some way it could have been registered to an Astra, moved across to Mercedes and then back to the Astra after the accident?

Is there any sort of audit trail available to determine the history? The whole thing is a bit dodgy with the other driver's insurance but if the car was not registered correctly it begins to make more sense.

Grateful for any help with this!

Don’t know the answer to the actual question but would say that the MoT check records do not seem to be reliable as we’ve twice had issues with them in the past few years where personalised plates have been involved.

Once with a personalised plate not showing up on the VOSA system when assigned to our horsebox.

Just this week found out that another plate is still showing up on a vehicle we’ve never owned (in spite of it having been on another vehicle we did own and MoT’d and now on another as it’s first registration nearly three years ago).

In both cases the DVLA records for taxation were correct.

DVLA site is coming back as a vauxhall astra registered in 2018.

Can this be taken as gospel?

Could it simply be that the plate that was originally on the Merc has been transferred to the Astra sometime after the accident?

First registration: 31 Jan 2018.

Based on the below i'm assuming the registration was registered to the Vauxhall in 2018 and has been ever since.

I had a look on carsnitch and found the below. I have included the reg to avoid confusion by blanking things out.

I don't really understand what happened on 11 Oct 2022 and this keeper change? The Vauxhall was on DP67KLO and they switched plates to T23HMD?

A Trade Licence Plate is different to a regular Registration Plate as it is not assigned to a specific vehicle and also allows the vehicle to be driven without VED (aka Road Tax) or a registered keeper.
