Following multiple suggestions of an estate when I asked if any car was going to serve me better than my Range Rover for the regular trips up and down the country I thought I’d ask about non-Range Rover options.

What, in people’s opinion is the nicest car with a big boot and four doors to regularly do long journeys but also to be a nice drive on shorter ones that isn’t a big SUV-styled one?

Not best value, most economical, or most reliable; what’s the one that the biggest pleasure to get in and drive?

I’m not likely to buy new, so need it to be models that have been out a couple of years.

Off the top of my head, I’d imagine some of these are good.

RS6 Avant
M5 Touring
S-class
S8
Flying Spur
Alfa Romeo Giulia
E63

I’m not sure why, but Rolls Royces just don’t appeal.

Thanks.

I ought to have mentioned that the back needs not to be at all claustrophobic, which (in my opinion) the Taycan is. Lots of glass and a good view out makes a big difference to how likely the young children are to get travel sick.

If that is the case try a Turismo Panamera & make sure it's got the pano roof light interior as I've found these are big factors with people that suffer with travel sickness.

I agree, thanks. The first step will be to go and sit in the back of a few myself and then sort out a test drive in the likely candidates.

E63, obviously.

I tend to do most of my driving in other cars at the moment, but when I have a reason to get back into it I always find that I've missed how nice it is to drive and how much I enjoy the noise and the theatre of it, but put it in comfort and it's very chilled for long journeys. I've done 13 hours of driving in a day in it and it's completely comfortable. The only slight downside for long journeys compared to something like my 640d is range, 400-430 miles from a tank but that's not too bad for the size and power of the thing.

Which version? I absolutely loved my SL63, although obviously that didn’t really offer the space if the E class.

Mine's a facelift S212 estate, with the 5.5 twin turbo. I'm sure the 213 is similarly enjoyable but there's definitely something fun about a proper ludicrously big engine.

A6 allroad with a decent engine and spec. Not too far off an rs6 but much better suited to the real world.

I previously had the “proper” 6.2 litre engine in a C63. I think that the 5.5 in my S class was at least as good, but think I’d miss something if moving to the latest ones.

Volvo for a super comfortable estate.

The Giulia on your list is likely too small, it’s a compact sports saloon, and does not have a big boot.

I'm also sure it's the A8 that has that fancy predictive adaptive suspension that can go over speed bumps as if they aren't even there. I wonder if any other cars have that?
