Tesla VED post April 2025
Discussion
I’m trying to work out how much the road tax will be on my model Y after April 1st this year. The car is a year old.
I’ve tried reading a few sites and it seems quite hard to work out!
I think
- its £190 for next year.
- hypothetically, were I to swap and for some reason get a new model Y in may, I think that would be somewhere north of £500
Things I don’t know.
- is either of the above correct?
- in the second case, does the first year new tax rate apply?, making year 1 over a grand?
Thanks in advance..

It’s not a loophole - the car is a year old and needs to be taxed. The current VED rate is zero until 1st April.
The loophole, for want of a better word, is folk SORNing electric cars this March that were first registered after 1st April 2023 in order to get a year of zero VED before the new rate kicks in.

Yup, I was trying to work out what the actual £££ amount was from April 2nd, I think it’s £190, but somehow struggling to work it out!The loophole for want of a better word is folk SORNing electric cars this March that were first registered after 1st April 2023 in order to get a year of zero VED before the new rate kicks in.

“Electric, zero or low emission cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025
You will pay the standard rate. This will be £195”
But you can renew it today for £0 for the next 12 months.
