Five-door Ford Fiesta ST | Spotted

One of the rarer fast Fords of recent years, family-friendly and yours for £5k...

So many of our favourite hot hatches are the simple ones: add lots of power to a small car, beef up everything else to give it a fighting chance, and you’re halfway to a winner. Make a small, fast car vaguely affordable and almost stylish and bob’s your uncle.

Which is why the 2013 Fiesta ST was such a hit. Familiar ground now, of course, but in opting for traditional thrills rather than a total reinvention Ford struck gold. Tens of thousands of Ecoboost STs found homes across Europe in the first three years of its life. Great value and great fun, buyers lapped the ST up. The mid-2010s never seemed so long ago.

But the Fiesta was so back to basics in its approach to hot hatchery that it overlooked a crucial area of the buying market: those who’d benefit from rear doors. It launched with three doors and was for sale like that until the end of 2016 and the arrival of the five-door; when the Mk8 launched at Geneva in March 2017 and went on sale a few months later, there wasn’t long for the Mk7 five-door to sell. And plenty of folk would surely have waited for the new car before getting their family-friendly pocket rocket. So there can’t be many.

Indeed it proved such a popular configuration that by 2022 the Fiesta ST had switched to five-door only, so the introduction of that derivative for a few months in the 2010s was quite significant. And well worth seeking out now, because for sheer thrills and silliness the 1.6 ST might have the later 1.5 beat.

Certainly for £5,500, as this one costs, it’s hard to think of what more fun there is to have with five doors and on three wheels. This ST-3 is now showing a six-figure mileage, but doesn’t look bad on it, and was serviced last month; those gigantic Recaro seat bolsters are intact, and the interior doesn’t seem any worse than it did when new. The kids will be fascinated by wind-down windows in the back, and your bottom will appreciate the volcanic heated seats. The wheels need a refurb as desperately as cheap tyres need replacing, but that’s hardly the end of the world.

With comparable Clio 200s still more money (and of course auto-only), plus the later Mk8 only available from £10k, the old ST’s case becomes even stronger. It’ll suit shopping trips, school runs, B-road blasts and anything else required. Which is probably why five-door hot hatches are now the only ones you can buy. There can’t be many as rare, engaging and affordable as this.

Cracking little whip! Only 5 bags of sand! It’s a bit leggy for miles - but hey you can’t have everything….!

One thing I notice about these is how much ‘headlight’ they have, stand next to one and touch each end, it’s a lot!

Maybe go and find one for under two grand then ? Would have thought that Panda 100 at nearly double this would be nearer shed territory.

Guessing you can’t unless it’s crashed.

Looks pretty tidy for the miles.

I'm with you on that too.

I thought this seemed like good value at first...until I saw the mileage anyway. I would love a go in one of these though, because they've always reviewed well in the motoring world.

Yep 3 door my preference too although I get the practicality of a 5 door. I still think one of these will grace our driveway one day smile

Well I’d certainly take this any day of the week over that Panda. Price seems okay, maybe a bit of haggle for the mileage but seems ready for the mountune treatment.

You should - I rate them as one of the very best hot hatches (excluding what I term hyper hatches)

The five doors, in a lot of cases had a bit of an easier life on average as the younger drivers avoided them and they were bought by folk who had to maybe transport kids, for whom a 3 door just wouldnt work.

Mileage wise they take it very well if maintained, would want to know if this has had a cambelt as will be due on mileage now, its a tough unit even though people confuse it with the wet belt issues as it comes under the Ecoboost umbrella. Most problems arise from rough treatment, sketchy modifications and a lack of maintenance which the target market specialise in, especially as these cars age.

I got mine four years ago (son had it before) my cousin and one of my mates have bought them since having had fancier cars but we are all in our fifties and appreciate the blend of old school feel (but not too much) and being relatively modern with a few creature comforts like DAB, heated seats and the very good quick clear windscreen. Its the nearest you can get to combine a modern daily with says a MK1/2 Golf GTI or 205 GTI in one car without all the old car foibles and having to keep it just for weekends.

Main downsides are you can look a bit of a tit (dont care) and the ride is "unforgiving" shall we say.

I think you’re right saying that on balance, the 5 door versions have had an “easier” life. It doesn’t always follow, but unmolested and abused 3 door examples are probably more difficult to find smile

I didn't think it would be long before the 5 door haters came along. Not sure it's a valid arguement, given the majority of the sheet metal is the same and the profile of the glass is very similar:

As the article points out, some of us need to carry kids / old folk.

I do agree that the original Vauxhall Corsa looked waaaaay better as a 3 door, with the box arches the 5 door didn't get, but that was 40 years ago yikes

I really miss my ST. I bought it new in 2014, adding the mounting 225 kit but it was otherwise stock. I thought it was perfectly judged for B road antics, along with the odd track day, but it was never the most forgiving car on a longer journey even when new.

When child number 1 arrived, I replaced the ST with a 5 door Golf R, followed by an M2 and later a Civic Type R. Despite all 3 replacements being objectively better and nicer cars, they never hit the spot like my ST.

The whole 3/5 thing has never bothered me at all. Adding an extra pair of doors makes it more practical, with kids especially. It’s a win win having hatch’s that offer both.

I recon more 208 GTi’s and Corsa/Astra VXR’s would have been sold if they offered an extra pair of doors.

Do love a hot hatch having owned many. And have been drawn to these as a second fun car but do not know which is the best one to go for engine, year and spec wise. One thing putting me off is the apparent ease in which the bumpers and skirts come off (having seen a few parked up without, obviously pinched!).

Oh and if a hot hatch is available as a 3 or a 5 door, then you always go for the 3 door.

As others have already said it makes the price of that Panda 100 from the other day look even dafter now!

Great cars I had a 3 door black one in 2015, cost me £16k brand new, I was shocked to see in about 2021 the mk8 was pushing 30k!

I had black with the orange seats which looked mega, unfortunately it fell victim to body kit theft and I came back after going to the cinema in Cardiff to find it without a front end and rear bumper.

Had it repaired but never got over the thought of it happening again, sold it on not long after

Shame as it was a great car, had the nickname the bone rattler but I loved the old school induction noise and they way it looked. Harsh on the motorway though. Mine was a ST2 so didn’t have cruise control.

I would have another, but only in white with orange seats for that Essex look
