Just heard via a friend of a friend.......

Hants Police are in a new television programme that starts filming from the 26th September for seven weeks.

If you use the M27 or the M3 this potentially affects you so please proceed with caution and pass onto anyone who you feel might just need to know.

The program a BBC South commission called "Traffic Cops" will be filmed covering the area from Ringwood concentrating on Ringwood M27 up to M3 J9 and a team working the ring road around Southampton (Totton will have a unit working it alone), Cosham M27 stretch to J5 of the M27 (Southampton Airport turn-off).
The fourth concentration is working from Winchester Services covering M3 to J10 M3 (Winchester South) using five unmarked cars, two Skoda 03 registration Octavias, an 05 plate dark red Mondeo and two Volvo saloon cars.

The BBC unit are going to be based out of a unit in Millbrook Road in Southampton and will also be covering the armed police response unit and the Southampton Airport Police Security / British Transport Police team.

The BBC team are in Citreon Picasso MPVs leased from Arriva.

To make it even more effective the Traffic police have authority from Chief Constable to "work to rule" So instead of the laid back approach to the usual Hants traffic police this will be a lot more concentrated to make it effective filming.

I don’t have any more info right now.

You have been warned my friends, so please don't end up being the star of the show ;)

Does anyone know the law regarding this. For example, do they have to ask permission to film you, or do they ask permission to use the footage afterwards?

Or, can they just do it anyway?

A typical camera can weigh about 10lb-20lb. It is against BBC health and safety guidelines to film inside a moving vehicle with a normal Digibeta or DSR500 camcorder, however this is routinely ignored. The repercussions of an accident would be enormous, if death/serious injury occured, jail sentences would be a certainty.

Its quite amazing that police officers allow cameramen and producers to film with this equipment inside a moving vehicle, since in an accident the camera would become a fairly lethal object (think 4-5 bricks). Especially amazing that they allow the removal of headrests, for the cameraman to get a better shot from the rear seats.

If in a public place, they can film whatever they like, and you have absolutely no choice in the matter. Some producers may ask a person to sign a form which states that you (the person interviewed-filmed) give permission for this to happen. Some producers even do this in a public place, but its really not necessary. Its only strictly necessary if you're being filmed on private property, specifically your own property - although if you're actually interviewed, it could be said that by doing so you're giving permission for the footage to be used anyway!

The problems come when you film a suspect who is later released (because they've done nothing wrong), and the programme fails to make this clear - thats why to save the hassle, suspects faces are routinely blurred out in the edit.

Absolutely. I would never have a camera crew in the car with me. Not only that, but even one rear passenger can screw up the handling, braking ability etc, of a car i drive every day and know well. These guys must want their faces on tv!! However, knowing 'the job', i should imagine there's a ton of H&S documation at the base somewhere...

I doubt they are using cameras that weigh 10lb in todays modern world, and yes I do know you are a soundman.

I thought they all used tie clip cameras these days

One of the guys I know through the sailing world is a Camerman on this. He is based in Manchester but down in Southampton for two months to do the filming.

I'll see what I can find out.

this explains the 10... yes 10 police bikes on our industrial estate off the m271.
13 years I have worked there seen about 5 police cars in those 13 years.

then a camera is out and they are everywhere....
