An Impreza tyre r in the readers forum made me think about all those cars you considered, and had the chance of owning, but for one reason or another chose something else.

For me, a 2dr Impreza was one. But despite owning 43 cars so far in my 34 years of driving, i haven’t come close to owning all of the ones I’d like to.

There’s plenty that I’ve consciously passed up on, and whether it’s because they’re now too expensive or they don’t suit my circumstances or I can’t fit them in my tiny garage, I know I’ll now never own (this is just the top dozen!)

Honda NSX
Escort cosworth
Fiat coupe turbo
Mitsubishi Starion
E30 M3
RX7 FD
Alfa 155
Forester STi
SD1 Vitesse
68 Camaro
R32 Skyline GTR
Alfa GT Junior stepnose

So what’s on your miss list? The ones that were attainable but you didn’t go for?

And to put a more positive spin on it, what’s the one you’re still trying to make happen?

Mine’s a Nissan 300ZX . Before they get too expensive.

Or a RX7 FC. Or a Celica GT Four ST165. Or a C10 square body stepside. Or a E30 318is. I can’t decide biggrin

993 RS is the only car I wish I’d gone for when they were relatively accessible, and would still buy at current prices if I had the money to burn.
Others I like, but simply aren’t worth the current values, to me at least.

I've recently bought a 997 C2S for exactly this reason - if I didn't do it now, I don't know when I would have done. I think I would have gone for some other modern 2-door sports coupe like an M2 and always wondered, what if? If I only have this for 6 months, at least I've checked it off the list.

Ever since og Gran Turismo back in the day I was obsessed with one day having an R34 Skyline GT-R. I was still at school back then so it was a way off, my girlfriend at the time (who was quite wealthy) promised to buy me one one day, but we split sometime during university before that could be called in.

Now I couldn't justify the price of one and it feels like the boat has been well and truly missed. Trying to find a good unmolested one for anywhere near reasonable price would be impossible these days I would think.

Renault 5 Turbo or Clio V6.

They were £20k or less at one point, but I stuck with the cars I had (and still do to be fair) but both of those models have sky rocketed in value by comparison. That said, I don't lust after them now but did in my mid-20s! haha

There were two biggies I passed on.

When a Honda NSX with manual box was available for about 16-20k and I chickened out of cutting my fleet down to one car instead of 6 biggrin

When I bought an unfinished Elise S1 with a VHPD engine rather than a complete and running Escort Cosworth recce car, crammed full of 909 motorsport parts. For 10 grand.

...and those Impreza type R, remember when they were 7 grand?

...and an E30 M3 for £8k that I walked on past due to LHD. D'oh.

Guess I started the thread to console myself that I wasn't the only one!

An original Mini Cooper S.
Prices are silly now.
I do have a '63 Mk1 Mini Super deluxe, just the basic 850 so I've got the looks if not the performance.

A Red TME and a Bayside Blue R34 GTR, I opted for a MRFQ320 at the time instead as it was newer and few more luxuries.

One of the most competent cars on the planet so no regrets but still, can't believe the others are so unobtainable now.

My only regret was not buying a friend's E-type back in the early 80s. A white 4.2 FHC, he wanted a very reasonable £4,500 for it and I was tempted but was ideally looking for a convertible at the time, though that never materialised either.

Apart from missing out on the car, I wonder what it would be worth now...

E30 BMW 325i Sport.
Always loved these but now comically overpriced in my opinion.

E36 BMW M3.
Having owned an E36 318is from new and, therefore, being painfully familiar with the onset of the dreaded tin-rot that E36s are prone to, I wouldn't dare now.

Ferrari 328GTS.
Back when you could get a nice one for £25k. Didn't because I didn't have a garage. Prices have tripled since so that ship has sailed.

Great car, bought mine, a Cecotto, for £10K

Then traded it for £8K when I bought my first Chimaera.

The cars I should have bought but will never be able to afford now:

Alpine GTA - thought about a few but didn't
Piper GT - Needed a few jobs had round headlights in place of the rectangular and the roof section didn't fit and then needed paint but it was for a couple of hundred. Was in Killingworth (circa mid '70s)
Lancia integrale - the one for £5K at the same time as I bought the E30M3 (circa 1999), the white one in Morpeth for about £7K (circa 1980's), the red one in Lancashire for £7k (circa early 2000's)
Impreza Classic in decent condition.

Cayman GT4: Because Porsche are a bunch of fking wkers who don't allow you to buy the car you want with your own fking money, instead you can only buy what they want to sell you because they are a bunch of s.

fking bds.

I probably wouldn't have liked it anyway. hehe

996. Can’t bring myself to live with the potential engine bills. Plus the cars are getting old now so other issues like rust are going to be an issue

I know a fella who owned several Delta Integrales over the years.

Just before I bought an imported Celica GT4, my shortlist was
- E30 M3 - nope, LHD
- Delta Integrale - nope, Italian / rust / LHD
- RX7 FD - nope, rotary engine (everyone I knew with one at the time had a spare engine hehe)

I could have coped with LHD in reality.
I might have got lucky with a Rex (or put an LS1 engine in it...)
but I never felt like I missed out on the Delta - having seen my mate's trials and tribulations with his. Bullet dodged.
