I used ISO1600 but it upset the neighbours.

But this Noise Ninja jobbie - is it free? Or if not, can anyone recommend a useful freebie?

PS has 'Reduce Noise' but it just makes things look blurred. Are there other plug-ins for PS?

Free for personal I think but not all the features of pro like batch processing.

Auto profile every image for the best results, I usually set the strengths to -5 as well.

In the event you don't want to splash out, NeatImage is free and pretty good.

My personal findings are that noise reduction often results in softness, which is just as bad as noise for me. However NeatImage/Noise Ninja can make a huge difference.

A thread from many months ago about Neat Image

Can anybody tell me how to use Noise Ninja?

I bought it with the intention of sitting down and learning it, but then got covered in an avalanche of work. Still have not learnt it properly, but looks unnecessarily complicated?! (I just want 'single click' software ).

Open Application.
Open image.
Click the small button top left with green bars in it.
Click "Profile Image"
Click the button with the small wand under the one with green bars
Move the preview box that appears on the image to an are for comparison and zoom so you can see the effect.
Adjust the sliders to give pleasing effect. (As above, both strengths to -5 avoids too plasticy a finish)
Click "Remove Noise" button.
Save file and admire.
Not quite single click but pretty easy, the batch tool makes it even easier still.

I use Imagenomic's Noiseware - very good and I think they do a 'free' stand-alone version for the PC.

Tried NN and NeatImage - preffered the results from NeatImage.

NeatImage is free unless you want batch mode, etc.
The free edition is plenty good enough.

Have both Noise Ninja and Neat Image installed. Strangely, I've done some photos that look better after treatment with Neat Image and others better with Ninja. Of the piccies I've played with, I feel NN gives better results more often. However, Neat Image is free amd NN isn't. NN if used inside PS will overlay the image with a grid if no licence is found. Neat Image workflow is very very simple and quick. NN is slower and not immediately intuitive.

Very tempted to pay for NN after being a complete idiot and shooting a load of stuff outdoors at ISO1600 the day after demonstrating the features of the camera to a friend indoors the evening before

So I have to save the image from Photoshop, then open up NN or whatever and work on it again? That's a pain.

Noise Ninja also works as a plugin within PS, so you open up the image in PS, then process it with Noise Ninja in the same way that you run Unsharp Mask or any other filter.

You can also set up an action to run it automatically.

Neat Image can be used as a PS plugin. Thats what their website says anyway. Im using it stand alone when i do so i cant tell you whether the plugin works well. neat image as a product is very good though. www.neatimage.com

you can use it for free but the unregistered version wont save tiff files. you can 'de noise' tiff files though to see the result. I gues its a kind of' the first ones free' approach. no idea whether you have to register to use it as a plugin though. HTH.

It's not noise you have to worry about with Tony's Lambo. When we drive in convoy with him we all take special anti-radiation pills.

You would say that, wouldn't you? After all you only live a 10 minute drive from there
