Can someone please tell me the form number which will allow me to claim some of my tax back.

I've been told that I can and should be claiming some of it back for having professional qualifications, in the 5 years or so of having the qualifications I've never thought about it being able to alter my tax code.

I checked the IR's website but couldn't find any forms to download, or details on the subject. I know the sum of money isn't going to be great......but every little helps

Thanks in advance

If you are an employee and your profesional qualification is "Wholly, Exclusively and Necessarilly" required in the course of your employment, then you can make a valid claim.
Why don't you just phome your tax office and explain the situation to them. These days they will amend your tax coding on the basis of the details given over the phone.

If you are Self Employed, you will be completing a Self Assessment tax return and you would make the claim that way, probably as part of yoiur Self Employed accounts.

I assumed the query was about annual subscriptions to professional bodies - which are often (but not always) allowable for tax relief.

Training costs and fees incurred in OBTAINING a qualification are usually NOT claimable.

Eric is bang on

I'll give the tax office a call on Monday, I thought they'd want to draw me over hot coals before they give me some money back

When might fees in obtaining a qualification be allowable?

I noticed this weekend my daughter paying fees and buying (very expensive) books for her exams for the next stage of her professional exams to become an anathestist. It seems odd that the employing hospital trust don't pay but that without the exams she can't qualify for registrar and from there to consultant and indeed may not have her contract extended if she doesn't do it.

To be honest, I can't envisage ANY circumstances when they would. However, I am always reluctant to say NEVER when discussing UK tax as the best way to find out is to sometimes apply for tax relief and see what happens.
