Servicing costa are going to be the same, insurance may be slightly less due to car valuation. But with an older car you will always incur a few extra wear and tear consumable item costs, it's the nature of the beast.
Also if you require a Porsche Official Warranty (good idea) then you can only do this upto and including the cars 9th birthday so if you intend to keep the car for a while then a newer model would make more sense.

Like an engine !!!!

Ducks and runs for cover

But seriously have a chat with a couple of experts on this there are some great 98 / 99 996's but there also seem to be many ropey ones where people have scrimped on servicing as they become cheaper they fall into a different group of owners who are not allyways prepared to spend the extra keeping them in tip top condition.

Also worth bearing in mind the facelift is meant to be better on engine's having said when I took my 993 into our local specialist last week they had a 51 plate with a blown engine and a 12k bill !!!!!

The warranty has to be a must from memory its only about £900 per year ... no brainer

All imho

£725 I believe for the warranty plus the 111point check which you don't need if its still in warranty

Im looking at getting a '98 996 Carrera 2, this ones had the work done on the seal apparently (?)and looks a good one, but I want the Porsche warranty thats been mentioned on here.
If you buy a car privately, can you then go to Porsche and ask for the warranty? or does it only apply to cars bought from an official Porsche dealer?

anyone with an eligible porsche (i.e under 9 yrs old) of any make can apply for a warranty, for which acceptance criterion is the 111 point check. this includes a privately bought car. if you are really serious about a car then you could demonstrate this by suggesting you would front up the £200 cost of the 111 point check if the vendor takes the £725 off the asking price to pay for the warranty, provided it passes. if not, you have a good report to negotiate on items that need fixing. after all, you'd probably get an inspection anyway wouldnt you?
