I know its a stupid question but I've never been shy of asking.

I got my bellhousing from John Eales complete with clutch release bearing. He machined it to suit a standard T5 gearbox to RV8 but when I assembled the bellhousing and measured it all up, it doesn't look right. fortunately i have the benefot of AutoCAD so I assembled it in AutoCAD and it appears the input shaft will only engae the outer clutch plate.
See drawing - its really feint for some reason. http://image40.webshots.com/41/4/74/8

After looking at it I reckon that it needs 11.5mm more enagement but the release bearing is only 4.5mm from the clutch vanes/fingers so I assume I need say 4mm more off the engine face of the bellhousing and the remaining 7.5mm off the gearbox face to get it as shown http://image40.webshots.com/41/6/98/1

How close should a release bearing be to the vanes ?

John Eales reckons my setup looks strange and we both want to make sure that its correct before he machines to these measurements. The flywheel is definitely not standard RV8 but I don't know what the original Tuscan engines used. It may have been changed by the previous owner to power his Pilbeam single seater.

When I bought the engine it had clutch plates with 10 splines so I had to change out the plates for ones with 23 splines to suit my T5 box but they have the same overall hub length as the old ones. When I reassembled the clutch assembly i noticed as I tightened the allen bolts into the flywheel, that the vanes/fingers compressed inwards towards the clutch - I think this is normal ?

But what I'm struggling to understand is how the release bearing disengages the drive in the clutch.

Thanks
Richard
