I wonder if the 993 gurus can help.

A friend of mine is having trouble starting his 993 c4s. There's no turn over, no solenoid type clicking , the annunciator lights come on as per normal on position one , position 2 should get start up , but nothings doing.

The OPC (150 miles away ) are suggesting starter motor, the owner thinks it could be an immobiliser fault as he got a slow turn-over on the engine earlier today , and the alarm went off ...

It would save him a packet if he could even get the car started , as he wouldn't have to have it flat-bedded to Belfast from Dublin ..

(Needless to say he doesn't have a Porsche warranty, though is thinking that one through as I type!!)
Ideas??

It could be loads of things:

Flat battery

immobiliser

Starter motor

Ignition key

earth strap / battery conection

.....are the most likely culprits. A good garage will be able to diagnose most if not all of the above without too much hassle.

If you can get to the brushes on the starter motor, they're worth pulling out and checking/replacing. Should only cost a few quid.

removing starter from 993 is a right pain...from previous experience if you are getting it to turn over, even slowly...i would clean up the connections on the earth strap...cheapest option to tick off the list.

Based on the description I would put my money on the immobilisor. I assume he has checked the obvious like charging the battery, checking the immobilisor has been turned off properly.

My money's on a duff battery. Once the battery in a 993 starts to go, it goes fast. Flat batteries can play funny buggers with the standard-fit immobiliser as well.

Usually all you need is a nice fresh *quality* battery (think Bosch silverline rather than Halfords 'calcium') and you're away...

This is getting serious, cyber's and nervy's money at stake.

I've got an additional 3rd party immobiliser that reactivates if the car isn't started within a set time period. Symptoms are the same as Ballcock's description when it's reactivated.

What type of alarm immob does it have?

If its a PA1000 - you can turn it off by using the little key - open the rear boot lid - immob should be on the left hand side (I think the key hole has a rubber cover on it).

Try starting it again...

But he could save himself a few bob by changing the starter motor himself.

My money's on the battery. I had a similar situation recently after a 3-week lay-off in driving. Everything looked okay, but nothing worked except the alarm system, which started to go off of its own accord. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the alarm by disconnecting the battery. A long trickle-charge later, everything was working again as normal. I guess the alarm worked in order to tell me that the battery level was dangerously low - no charge, no alarm.

Are we ever going to get to the bottom of the flat battery and smoking tyre stories?
