It all started last week (actually the Friday before) ... on the same day I managed to find:

a) a set of sport classic wheels, which I've been looking for for ages; and
b) a 3 spoke wheel with airbag at a decent price (thanks Ace!)

So far so good.

Anyway the 993 was in for new discs and pads so I had the wheels delivered direct to the indie for fitting (with my current tyres) while I was away last week.

At the same, following VMax, I'd decided to have a leakdown test, just in case, but really didn't expect it to find anything (can you see where this is going?).

Anyway it started to go wrong yesterday, it transpires that one of the new rear wheels is not 9" wide but 8.5". Hmm. So I speak to the suppliers and it turns out its a mistake on their part which they admit, BUT they don't actually have another 9" wheel.

Oh well - swap all the tyres back over then. Send the wheels back.

Then today I get the results of the leakdown test. First bank: 4%, 6%, 4% (cold) - pretty good
Second bank: 12%, 9%, 70% Holy sh1t!

And then they point out one of th rear silencers has a largish crack in it, a sort of coup de grace.

So the estimate for rebuilding the problem side is £3K. Do I just do that or consider some sort of 9M style upgrade?

I plan to call 9M tomorrow but suspect that it will come in significantly more.

Dealt lemons? Make lemonade. Sling on those natty 9m billet heads if you're having to rebuild the top end anyway, and swap the silencers for some nice noisy ones. Sorry to hear of your woes, but I'd be taking it as the ideal excuse to soup my car up...

(this optimistic, sunny post is only my internet persona. Anyone who knows me knows that really I'm a depressive, pessimistic bastard. So... remember that Tuesdays are the worst days of the week, bar none)

I like your style.

However, those natty 9M billet heads appear to run to £10.5K+VAT fitted and whilst I can take a £3K hit, 10.5 is possibly going it a bit, especially as I'm only looking at half a top end rebuild.

Notwithstanding, I will defimitely be giving Warrington a call in the morning.

Be careful then, the 9m crew have plenty of nice toys to sell you... I phoned Colin to buy some exhausts and a ECU remap, and ended up getting a supercharger

At least get some noisy pipes!

Ah but spending £3.5k on a rebuild is an expensive repair bill and will make you feel unhappy whereas spending £10k on the billet heads creates a whole new toy to play with and will make you smile

The exhaust can be welded so don't worry about that.

I have a set of Turbo wheels for sale but they may be too big. They're even shod with Dunlop SSR's (worn)

I'm touched.

Shall we start with a large donation to the tertius engine fund?

Thanks, however, I'm particularly looking for 17" Sport Classics. Sport Classics because I love the look and 17s because a) I want to keep the ride quality of 17" wheels, and b) to simplify swapping tyres around.

OK now we're getting somewhere. Not very far but somewhere ...

For those who are interested, there was no progress on the decision making, but I'm determined to decide what to do this week as I must have the car back by late August for the 'ring.

Dan,
Oh no! Sorry to hear of your engine woes, but as has already been said, if you have lemons you make lemonade...
Sounds like an opportunity to me

OK thanks all for your advice even though it mainly involved spending a lot of money

So after lengthy discussions with Colin at 9M and Bob at RGA (where the car is presently) the decision is to have RGA rebuild it as standard, but for them to do both banks while they are at it, and put a LSD in while the engine is out.

(Also considering any other "opportune" but cost effective upgrades at this point.)

The money saved (and the difference, allowing for the fact that I don't have sports exhaust or cats, comes to something in the region of £10K), will go to track days and driver training.

Over the winter I plan to take it to Colin and have the re-map, sports exhausts and cats in one go.

Is your car running ok? Why did you get a leakdown test in the first place?

I just wonder that if you'd not got the test, you'd be driving the car about, perfectly happy!

Just a suspicion, nothing really definitive made me do it.

And yes you are probably right - I would be running around perfectly happy, but with track days and a Ring trip coming up, for how long ...?
