How are all you guys who think leather seats are best getting on in this weather?
I don't understand why they are a preference. They're also freezing in winter and look worn far quicker than cloth?

Rich kids! I meant for us older cars, where fitted AC never worked for more than 5 minutes anyway?
Seriously
Does AC take away performance? or is that a myth?

Leather will outlast cloth by a long way if maintained properly.

Good quality leather seats are like good quality leather shoes. They take on a patina with age and also take on a "set" over time. They can be uncomfortable in extremely hot weather for a short period of time but once the AC kicks in that's not a problem.

Not as uncomfortable as an alloy handbrake lever - Mine was almost too hot to touch yesterday

Any discomfort is negated by one not sitting in crap velour or being hemmed in by a recaro

It used to on older cars but as far as I understand modern efficient air con systems make negligable difference to the performance or fuel economy.

Any air conditioning system relies on a compressor which takes power from the engine, either mechanically or electrically - enough said!

So does it make a difference to performance when the air con is switched off, since the compressor is driven of the front of the crankshaft?

You can notice a small difference in performance on the 996 with the AC switched on but it's definitely a must have. Just turn it off if you want the extra oomph.

Yes there is a very slight cost, but not enough to worry about and I very much doubt that you would notice. I am fairly sure that the GT3 manual claimed that the car will temporarily turn the compressor off under extreme driving conditions because of this. Frankly, I wouldn't consider anything without it though. Also, I have heard that the cost of AC in enomomy terms is no worst than the drag from putting the windows down in typical driving, so the case for the prosecution seems lacking unless you are in a racing car.

You can also vomit on leather and it simply wipes off yet it takes ages to pick the carrot chunks out of velour

Both mini sprints have had occasion to chunder in moving sprint vehicles recently, however in the landy the seats are shall we say gently contoured but in Helmut, wipe off and go, we love the hot weather.
