My neighbour and friend is just about to buy another 911.

He was thinking about a 996 turbo on the basis that it would be stronger for trackdays than a carrera.

ie. he was assuming that its engine was derived from the gt1 engine as with the GT3. Now I am pretty sure that its only the gt3 (perhaps the gt2 too) that has the derivative, and not the turbo.

Am I wrong..???.could easily be...but I just want to make sure his info is right before blowing the green.

He was looking to spend 70-80k on a red or yellow mint turbo with shitloads of options.(pretty rare as everyone seems to like boring colours nowadays)

I am trying to convince him to get a new GT3, but he is worried about he ride stiffness, (even with the new pasm adjustability)
but of course getting a test drive will be a bloody joke.

Also, if he was to get a gt3, what sort of wait is there if placing a deposit now??

With the 996 series cars, the GT3, GT2 and Turbo engines are all derived from the GT1 block.

Bar a few minor bits the turbo has the same engine as the GT2, but with smaller K16 turbos. The X50 has the same K24 turbos as GT2. Differences in performance figures for the GT2 and Turbo X50 comes from the fact max boost on the X50 is set at 0.9 bar, and the GT2 is set at 1.0 bar (this is on the 450 bhp X50 v mk1 462bhp GT2, not sure about the later 481bhp GT2).

Usual suggestions of getting your mate to drive both. If he is going to do a lot of trackdays I'd be looking towards the GT3 more favourably. If mainly road with only one or two trackdays per year I'd go with the turbo, although I wouldn't spend £70 to 80K on one with the new 997 turbo having just been launched.

Your chum needs to clarify exactly what he needs.

He is unlikely to get a new GT3 in the near future, but he might be better off with a C2S (with X51 power kit if necessary) and the various 'sports' options, including suspension in lieu of pasm.
