After 3 TVR's (2 Chimaera'a and a Cerbera) I decided it was time for a change, so have just picked up a 1995 993. It is a lovely car, and one I wouldn't mind racking a few miles up in. The car is in great condition, but I noticed a bit of a rattle coming from the back-end when I lightly press the throttle. It disappears when I lift off. Any ideas?

.. It sounds a bit like poking a stick in a fan... Doesn't sound like it should. Any sesnible suggestions about what it might be?

Difficult to diagnose without hearing it. Could be the fan belt sensor switch. Loose belts tend to squeak rather than rattle. They can all sound a bit tappety at tickover it's perfectly normal. get someone who knows 993s to have a listen

Thanks. Will be popping into the local specialists anyway to try and get the A/C sorted out. Am sure that it's OK though.

Could be clutch release bearing - makes a funny noise when it gets old (doesn't mean it's shagged though).
Any ideas when the clutch was last done?

I don't know when the clutch was replaced, but my instinct tells me that it is something to do with the exhaust, it's a very tinny sound.

I'm used to TVRs, which rattle rather a lot!

Could be a partly corroded / loose heat shield maybe?

Heat shields most likely culprit. Also worth checking the clips that hold the engine undertray on - can break and cause a rattle.

Just to cause confusion, here's a left-field one for you... early 993s and those subjected to lots of winter use are now starting to corrode through the mild steel supports that hold the rear PU to the engine cover...

I destroyed mine driving to Switzerland a couple of years ago (salt damage) and had to replace them - with corroded through supports, the PU rattles against the wings. My local indie had never heard of the problem when I asked them to fix mine - just popped back and they've got another 993 in for the same problem! Must be starting to rear its head now.
