I did have a look but I don't believe this question has been covered before!

I'm looking to buy a 2001+ 996 WITH OPC Warranty. My question is, does the extended warranty state that the car has to cover a certain mileage over the year in order to make a claim? Or do extended warranties cover any mileage, as long as it is below 125,000 or 9 years irrespective of the mileage done within that year?

Any basics I should kbnow about OPC warranty, about what it covers, what to be careful about etc??

You just KNEW I'd be first here, didn't you.

It covers any mileage per annum, no minimum, although if you're using it very little or not at all it still needs the annual service (£150 IIRC)

It can be extended up to the car's ninth birthday (i.e. ten years) or 125,000 miles. No claim limit and no excess.

See my profile - I've never had any problems getting stuff done under warranty. But it doesn't (as some people seem to think ) cover tyres, petrol and sweeties.

Good luck - DO IT!

Cheers. That's excellent! I'm guessing something like a clutch would be considered as a wear and tear item and wouldn't be covered? But a faulty gearbox would? Obviously the brake disks and pads and timing chain are covered by the major service, so no warranty claim there.

Yeah I know what you mean about just DO IT. I've had my eye on one of those facelift models for a while now...

Clutch wear would not be covered, but mechanical failure would be.

A faulty gearbox would be covered (assuming no abuse) - itto engines.

Be aware though that Porsche can download telemetry and if the engine has been over revved they'll tell you to get stuffed. Same if they find any mods.

Somebody posted that the warranty is good for just one engine change .. that doesn't sound right (I mean , surely you'd have an automatic 2 year warranty on a new engine anyway) ...

Sounds like uninformed to me.

If they replace the engine then the OPC warranty terms will still remain in place. They won't say "oh sorry you've had your one engine, now feck off."

That would have been my reasoning ... Also I couldn't see anyone associated with an OPC even thinking to say 'Feck off' .. WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too Paddy!!!

Just to let you know that I simnply asked the question of an OPC senior employee - when trying to establish what the Porsche warranty covered - and was told that you only get one of anything under the warranty - so no second engine - however I was also told there was a 6 or 7 year limit which there clearly isn't - perhaps someone with a warranty - who has had an engine already - could check this out. There is however an element of goodwill that seems to vary the result between different outlets.

Judging by the fact that my pal was told today by his OPC that the size of his engine was 3.8 when it's a 3.6 , I'm not surprised if they throw out duff info..

I wasn't trying to catch anyone out by mentioning 2nd engine warranty on this thread , Baz , you'll notice I had kept your name out of things...

Just a quick observation about Porsche OPC warranties.

A mate was considering buying a pre-owned Lambo and apparently new Lambo cars come with a three year manufacturers warranty (two in Europe). After this, no more and it is not extendable. You can extend to an RAC covered warranty but the max claim is £5k (erm... £5k for a Lambo is sod all..). No further official Lambo warranties are provided for any cars more than three years old. Now would you buy a £85k pre-used Lambo with only a max £5k per time warranty... Guessed not, my mate bought a 997S!!

People may have had some probs etc with the OPC warranties and have reason to bitch and moan but it certainly does buy peace of mind and for £750 a year for older cars its a helluva deal...

Just shows that compared to other manufacturers us Porsche drivers actually get a pretty damn good deal.. No wonder Porsche's are so popular...!!
