Hello all,

First post here for me so here we go.

I am looking to buy a 996 turbo with a budget of around 48k. There seems to be a few good examples in this price bracket, buy I have come across a couple of turbos on 51 plates with Turbo S badges on the back. Were there any genuine Turbo S's back then, becuase from what I understand the S was only released last year? Also, these advertisments mention nothing regarding the X50 engine upgrade, so why would anybody have it rebadged?

Any ideas? confused

Might be worth checking out the classifieds, there's a nice midnight blue regular turbo on an 02 there which after negotiation wouldn't be tremendously above your budget...

Thanks supermono I will take a look! As for talking to an expert, I have emailed Peter Morgan from Peter Morgan Consulting to come and take a look at any car I purchase. Has anybody on here had any dealings with him?

He did my inspection, his fee was covered by the value added in getting the vendor to fix a list of little niggles prior to sale.

Very comprehensive report with photos of the underside as well as all round the car.

Busy chap mind!

Ok, they have finally got back to me. Both cars have just had the "S" badge added for show. I am all for adding bodykits if they look good (e.g. GT3 aero kit on a carrera), but adding a badge just for show without having the equivilent power upgrade is a bit much!

not a bit much, very sad more like
(esp. as anyone who knows anything about 911 would know it was incorrect)

As long as OPCs are willing to sell any badge to anyone - and they always have done previously - then this will happen. Can't see a problem unless an unscrupulous person tries to pass off their car as something it isn't, which must be unlikely for several reasons. If it enhances the enjoyment of ownership in some way for some people then why not. Others buy Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis to wear like jewellery and make a social statement rather than to drive, but that's their choice.

Live and let live

Confession time. My car has an S badge but is not an S. It was on when I viewed the car and the OPC were going to remove, but I quite liked it. I do still consider removing it as I am not entirely comfortable with the notion of passing it off as something it isn't, but given the potential for a marked bootlid I am wary of doing this. If anyone enquires I always 'fess up that it isn't an S.

Basically, I genuinely don't feel that strongly about it either way. scratchchin

BTW the car has an X50 kit, PCCB and turbo aerokit so I guess it is pretty close to S spec, for what its worth.

then yours would be hard to tell from a real S - aerokit irrelevant, just the alloy wheels would give it away (and I prefer the unpainted look anyway, your car sounds v nice spec!)

As yo say it was not you who put the badge on but IMVHO badging a car up to something it isn't loks a bit desperate - like the 318i drivers who put M3 badges on the back

Know what you mean, I hate M3 badges on 318's etc with a pea shooter exhaust sticking out the back. Hmmm....

Why have a haircut or shower, it only makes you look better and smell nice, you can't run any quicker wobble

I love the opposite.. No badges at all!! Keep 'em guessing. I love the subtle look and I know what car I'm driving.

This is very popular in Germany where tons of cars are de-badged.

You can also go totally the opposite. Brabus (the major Merc tuner) will sell you a 7.0ltr V12 conversion for the new E-Class and one of the options they offer is a D320 badge on the back...!! Got to love the German sense of humour... D320 blasting past you at 180mph on the autobahn would make you sick!!

Not quite the same! An aero kit makes it look nice, not a badge!
I am looking at a 2000 W, black on black manual with the sports exhaust and aero kit but no PCM with 48k on the clock from an independant for 46k. Obviously I realise condition makes a big difference, but if it is in good condition do you guys think that is a reasonable price? It has had the OPC check so ready to buy a warranty on.

yes seems reasonable and good it has had the 111 point check - what sports exhuast? often dealers put this but its only the chrome tips, and on older TTs I would not want PCM1 as it looks very old fashioned with the cassette player

I pressumed it was the porsche switchable sports exhaust but I will double check. (I have not been to see the car yet). It has the CR32 stereo upgrade. Is this much better?

no switchable exhuast option on 996TT - in fact no sports exhaust whatsoever from Porsche

but tubi / milltek / ruf etc do them so maybe after-market is fitted

hmm, interesting, the guy is telling me it is a porsche sports exhaust (non switchable)that was fitted after market. Any one know any major differences between a 2000 and a 2002? I think I read somewhere the interior was updated in 2002?
