My Rear Offside wheel bearing has gone, the wheel moves freely enough and there is no play to speak of but it makes a horrible droning/whining noise.

Anyway, after much hassle today and two failed attemps to change it (didn't even get the bloody hub off ) I have no more time to try and change said bearing before I drive the 400 miles to Cambridge tomorrow morning (I hope to arrive just before the Re-Run of the GP).

Here is the Dilemma.

I have been informed by several clued up people that driving long distance with the bearing the way it is could be dodgy, ie AA recovery dodgy. Anyone know how? What might happen?

Should I attempt it, or change the bearing then go.
I was told that by packing grease into the bearing behind the cap should help but won't solve anything, the grease will gently work it's way in.

TIA

Stuart!

I wouldn't chance it, mate.. get the train. Then you can be half cut by the time you get there.

I was on holiday once with my grandparents, staying in some dire shithole in Weymouth. Anyway, there was a droning coming from the back wheel of the car for most of the time we were away, until it got seriously loud and the wheel got too hot to touch.

Car got towed away, and the diagnosis was that the bearing had gone and had got so hot, with the continual driving on it whilst it was shot, that the axle got welded to the wheel or hub or somesuch.

On the upside, we couldn't go on any "exciting trips" for a few days whilst they got it fixed.

I should think carefully before you do a long trip on it!

Dont risk it stu if you can get the part its about an hours work , the brearing is mounted in the brake drum , buy a new one remove the brake drum (lots of swearing required) pull out the old and put in the new then reasemble , buy ad mart and look for a new car how many miles has your onion done ? you seem to get nothing but grief off it ! Hows the alarm holding out BTW ?

Hmmmm, thats what I thought!

I've got the part, but I had to buy a 30mm Socket, so I trundled into halfords this afternoon, and bought one, but didn't make sure it was a 1/4", bought a 1/2" by accident, so like a tit, had to go back, but by the time I got there it was shut

I've changed the same one just after I bought the car, I think it was all the standing about the car did while the clutch was buggered at the beginning of the year. Oh well, looks like I'm up early again in the morning!

Dennis, Alarm is fine, checked it today, its the drivers side lock switch which is causing the problems. Everything I did caused the alarm to double beep, but it didn't when I locked the drivers door! Need to get one of those now! Bloody Car!

If you were bout 600miles closer mate id do it for nothing for ya.
Rear wheel bearings arent such a problem as theyve not got anywhere near the same forces acting on them as the fronts.
As an example, me old corolla has had the same syndrome for bout a year now, ive greased it onece to quieten it, did, but now its as bloody noisy as ever.
Noway am i giving totoya 85 sovs.....god my speeling...im a bit too drunk to be answering questions..... giggle..

WHAT!? A 30mm socket in 1/4" drive!? You'll be bloody lucky! The drive would shear long before the hub nut came off. But then I guess you could always buy one of those American SNAP-OFF things with a lifetime warranty and take it back every 5 minutes for a new one...

If it's anything like the usual Wedge hub nuts, you'll be needing a 3-foot cracking bar and a 250 lb.ft. torque wrench as well... and they do NOT do those in 1/4"...

I've been wondering if you managed to get it changed in the end?
