Hi folks, just got an upgrade to the Exec, I'm going to set it up to run in Corporate mode and manually configure the bits and bobs, as I believe it runs faster without all the O2 Active stuff on. (I wish I'd of known that was possible when I ran my XDA2)

Are there any other tweaks possible to make the thing run better?

Regards
Iain

From experience, run as much additional software from the SD card as possible, and keep an eye on running programs. Pre-emptive memory flushing (soft reboots rolleyes ) once a day also helps. Do try not to allow the battery too low, as this will disable the SD card, then when it comes back, the autorun from TomTom or similar flicks in.
PS The Bluetooth sucks quite a lot for voice stuff.

Good advice. Although if you're running anything using a Today plug-in, run that from the main device memory. And for some reason, Opera Mini seems to prefer being installed to the main storage memory too. Not quite sure why.

Oh, and I'd recommend a little package called MemMaid. It allows you to flush your cache, "reclaim RAM" and all that stuff. Saves on the soft reboots. And iLauncher will allow you to see at a glance how much program memory, battery charge, etc. is left.

The XDA Exec supports UMTS, yes.

I'm having issues with both MiniMo and PocketOpera both seem to have massive memory issues.

Bloody 64Mb, I ask you! How much would it have cost them to make them with 1Gb main storage, bloody cheapskates...

Agreed. yes That would've helped matters a lot.

I don't know MiniMo, but what issues are you having with Opera? It works fine here, no memory issues at all.

Damn. Now I've said that, the Unit will no doubt catch fire or get lost or something. hehe

Just wont start or if it does, dies quickly, memory issues. I run SQB Pocket Plus which maybe robbing quite a bit.

Thinking of reflashing mine with the iMate ROM so it doesnt have all the operator nonsense gobbling space.

Have you tried a Corporate Install? Absolutely transforms the thing into what it's meant to be, without all the nonsense programmed in by O2.

Pocket Mechanic is good for sorting out memory issues. MemMaid is pretty good for reclaiming RAM as well - in fact, now I think about it, I think you can reallocate some of the storage memory to program memory using one of those two. Don't take my word for it though, I know nowt about it really.

Corporate install? Wossat 'en?

Current memory card full alas, only bought a 1Gb and TomTom 6 is 964mb with the full compliment of Western Europe maps and speed camera database.

Corporate install is when you do a hard reset of the thing (which wipes everything from memory and restores everything to factory settings). It gets rid of that blasted O2 Today nonsense and just runs a nice, clean machine. cool You need a code to activate it though, I can tell you what it is if you want to know?

The other really huge advantage of the corporate install is that it clears out all the crap that accumulates if you install and then remove programs. You'd need to key your GPRS details and (I think MMS) details after a corporate install, but that was the only remotely tricky thing about it. I used to find it needed soft rebooting quite frequently before, now it gets a soft reboot once a day whether it needs it or not, just to clear out the memory. The O2 software is the real PITA.

If you do a corporate install you can also claim back the storage space all the useless 02 crap takes up and reconfigure it as usable space - about another 8-10 meg, but it's far from straightforward eek

I am familar with the device in question. You probably don't want to know what I think about it, and even if I did, I'm almost certainly not allowed to tell you...

Aha! A man of Mr E. hehe

I expect you don't like it very much. A lot of people don't. Personally, I can think of a dozen ways in which it could be improved, but it does what I need it to so I don't really care too much about its shortcomings.

That's not to say I wouldn't swap tomorrow if I found something that's a bit more stable. But it would have to do everything the Exec does. Until then, I'm quite happy with the Exec. cool

Not so much the interface (I think windows CE is clunky to say the least, but that's the end users problem). I'm more concerned with the way it interacts with the network.

How do you mean? By all means tell me on e-mail if you'd rather not post the info in public. I'm curious now.
