Hi

I'm thinking of buying a 911, probably a 996 and have started to look at cars.

I drove a 996 with tiptronic gearbox and was impressed with the system, although I was skeptical before I had tried it.

Obviously tiptronic costs more, but does it add to the resale value of the car and do people prefer manual transmission over automatic.

I will probably eventually choose what I feel is best for me, but curious as to what the view of other Porsche owners.

Thanks for your replies.

Down to preference at the end of the day. I 100% wanted Manual as its a proper drivers car.... Let the debate begin..

simply, if it is a weekend car, manual; a daily car, tiptronic.

on a 996, it is better, since it has 5 gears, and a 993 only has 4 gears

disagree, I use it as a daily driver but would never go for tip. Try the two and see what suits you best. The character of the car changes dramatically IMHO

The general, and somewhat stereotypical view is that the manual is the true drivers choice, and that the Tip is primarily for those owners who are 'good with colours', 'bat for the other team',... etc etc

I have a manual (997) and use it everyday without problem. If you do a lot of City driving then the Tip will be a benefit for these ocassions, but you will lose out on the driver involvement when you are 'pressing on'. I don't believe that the Tip is as sporting a choice as say the Audi DSG or BMW SMG gearboxes - hence Porsche are bringing out the PDK auto in due course.

I think the key thing for you is to try both, and go with what you prefer, given the type of driving you are likely to do - don't take too much notice of the disparaging comments about the Tip that you may find posted on here....

Firstly, the key with 996 buying, is to get the one you want - theres no point having the experience marred by you doing something for resale reasons when your heart really wanted something else.

As for you saying a Tip costing more, i wouldnt agree there, perhaps at the nearly new stage, but a lot of buyers are 'enthusiastic drivers' and as such, much prefer the manual - which means a lot of tips on the market, and if anything, a lower price because they are less desirable.

But if you want one, get one... it all comes down to personal preference, i never even considered one, so i cant say what they're like to drive...

Manual v Tip ?

We've had several - 964 C2 Man and Tip, 993 C2 Man and Tip, 996 C2 Man and Tip. Also had a 2.4 Sportomatic (clever but too much torque slip). The Tips were used mainly by my wife, but I often drove both 'back to back', so I can be fairly objective.

Tiptronic is quite an accomplished system, of its kind, but it is still old torque convertor technology, and Porsche should, by now, have sorted a proper paddle shift manual gearbox.

OK some people like Tip, but the 6-spd manual gearboxes on the 996, 997 and Boxster/Caymans really are just so good, that IMO the Tip blunts a sharp tool.

On the manuals, the controls (clutch and gear change) have just the right amount of weight, feel and smoothness and the engines ooze strong, low down, pick up and mid-range torque and the throttle response is instant.

Under virtually all driving conditions I would opt for the manual.

Even my wife prefers the manuals. She's had manual Boxsters since 1997 and last year, when she upgraded to a 987S, she tried the Tip, but didn't like it. She felt it "demasculated" the car eek

It'll be interesting to see how the forthcoming PDK/DSG system compares.

what he said, it won't be worth any more (maybe less but not material) and will be a bit harder to sell on IMHO. But what does that matter?

Hello matey

I purcahsed my tip after a test drive even though I was looking for a manual, why because it was great.

But then my idea of great is not the same as others on this board.

Drive it and see which you prefer simple. I never made it to the manual test drive but previous to this car thought that I could not live without a manual gearbox.

I love it now and wouldnt trade it for a manual

After Tiptronic/Manual, one of the most popular subjects for discussion around here is how tough it can be to get decent money for second-hand Porsches. So whatever else you do, make sure you properly and extensively try both gearbox options before buying the one that you want. Forget the next owner - he won't be paying enough for the privilege of you now having to sit down and specify a car for him. To hell with him, the cheapskate bastard - if he wants a Tip, let him go to an OPC and buy his own. For what it's worth, I don't rate the Tip because it's an automatic - its not a clutchless manual; it's a Mercedes derived auto and it makes a Porsche drive and sound like a London Taxi. This may tick your boxes if you're going to use the car for a busy commute, but if you ever plan on taking the car to a track, or having a bit of fun with it, you'll find the manual far more satisfying and you'll have saved a few quid in the process. In any event - you've got a TVR in your profile, so presumably you're still in the land of the living. You've plenty of time yet to enjoy losing your hair and watching your waistline advance towards the dashboard in a Tiptronic.

And that's all I have to say about that. *lights fag

He explained that. He says his idea of great is not the same as ours.

Seems a bit strange that, regardless of what his idea of great is, that he categorically states that he wouldn't change his tip for a manual, given that he has no idea how good (or great or bad or whatever) the manual is !

I should have added a 'sardonic' smiley after my post. I suppose ultimately, he wasn't/isn't that fussed about the gearbox to start with.

Edit - though if it's the car in his profile, it is quite pretty.
