Is there anyone other than Adrain Crawford who sources cars from the continent?

Alternatively, does anyone have a LHD, Manual, C2S/C4S they're looking to sell?

Cheers all.

I was thinking that, but I guess the downside is you have to do all the "looking" yourself - could be time consuming.

I used MCP Motorpsort for mine - feel free to pm me for my experience.

Thanks for the info Dan.

Yes I spotted some beauties on www.mobile.de but I wouldn't know where to start if i did it myself - and work and family committments mean that time is just too short to even contemplate it.

I've contacted Adrian Crawford and will see what he comes up with.

Cheers.

Very interesting thread. I have seem some stonking cars for sale in Europe and always wondered what is involved in bringing them across?

Does anyone have a ballpark figure for what it "costs" (in terms of time and money) to bring one across? Assuming 993 Turbo available @ Euro 65k, what would the "finshed product" parked on your drive and fully registered, etc cost?

I am constantly looking for RHD cars being sold in LHD countries! Anyone noticed any around?

Time - how long is a piece of string. Depends entirely on where you're buying and if the vendor is organised.

Cost - (asuming it's within the EU so there's no duty to be paid) export plates and re-registration, fuel, hotel, tunnel crossing, registration in UK/MOT/Road fund - £650 is what it cost me

In a sense you can ignore road fund and MoT as those are "normal" on an annual basis on any car. First registration fee is circa £40.

A cheap channel crossing is less than £100; just throw the return away.

Car hunting trips can add up but with the likes of Easy Jet, Ryan Air, Air Berlin and GermanWings flights are cheap.

Expenses you may need to incur include re-facing the speedo to read mph and a Cat 1 alarm. The MOT man won't care about the speedo but when you go to register the car the licensing office can demand that it be inspected for things such as the speedo face. You'll also need a certificate of Conformity (Porsche Cars GB can issue this for circa £70) to prove the car is EU type approved. Otherwise you'll need SVA which is more expensive. The alarm requirement will depend upon your insurer.

Make sure the bill of sale states that the purchase price includes all taxes. It's unlikely to be the case otherwise on a car as old as the 993 but you don't want any aggro when you go the register the car and the Inland Revenue start thinking about charging you VAT.

On a 993 you can flatten the headlamp beams with the levers inside the lights so no lamp changes are required. You might wish to source a set of RHD lamps over time though.

Most UK companies won't insure the car until it's UK registered. I think you can get temporary export plates relatively easily in Germany along with temporary insurance that should get you home. My experience in importing a car from France was that it was insured by the UK insurer on the chassis number but the insurance was only valid when the car hit UK soil and then only to drive the car from the port to home, from home to the MoT station and back and from home to a DVLA inspection (if required) and back until the car was on UK plates. I had 30 days to complete that task.

Some more info here: www.direct.gov.uk/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4022583&chk=fvejyg

It looks like a Certificate of Conformity is now part of a bigger step in the process; when I brought my car in 3 years ago the VCA certificate did not exist.

Hope this helps...

You could do far worse than a German OPC; they're a different breed than what you see in the UK.
