Ok guys any clues on this one. I have two machines on different site, both running win XP.

the first one is on a wireless lan, and fell off the network. the wireless was connected but not getting ip from the dhcp server. put in a static ip, and dns and gateway, can now see everything on the lan and connect to the server but no routing out to the internet? this machine had upgraded it i.e7 research showed that to be the culprit, so system restored th the day before and all fine..

2 days later its done the same again... and they are not accepting windoes updates?

on monday the other machine shows the same symptoms. this time on a wired lan. but the machines still on i.e.6

system restore to friday and all comes back to play... that worked fine untill reboot this morning and down again...

Anyone come across this its driving me nuts... the av on both machines finds nothing...

cheers

Are you getting your DHCP from a router or is there an actual server running the DHCP service? I had a similar problem recently where my router stopped allocating new leases, bounced the router and all has been fine since.

If they're both connecting to the same router which is acting as a DHCP server, and they'e both having problems getting an IP address, I'd be inclined to suspect the router as well.

If you think it's an update that's caused it, check the updates installed on the two machines that are failing against some that are working.

What happens if you ipconfig /release, /renew?

Is a security update that is activating on reboot?

doesnt pick anything up, limited conectivity. im assuming it is a secutrity update somewhere, but since the first time it happens they have stopped approving updates on the one box !

where's the best place to check what updates have been installed

Add/remove programs from contraol panel. Ceck the "show updates" box.

If you want to pin the exact .dll you could do a quick system image using something like WinInstall, then check the file/rgistry diff after a reboot?
