I'm sure this has been answered before but I can't find it through the search option.

My recollection is that to be a legitimate business expense clothing (as most expenses) must be "wholly and exclusively" for the business (or similar!). My OH is a driving instructor and wants to get logo'd shirts. I can't remember if logo'd shirts makes them "wholly and exclusive" or not or whether clothing isn't a legitimate expense unless it's protective clothing?

Thanks in advance!

Protective Clothing and Uniforms would be classsified as allowable business costs. logoed shirt would be looked on as part of a uniform.

Fab thanks Eric - it'll be logo'd shirts for him then!!

Can anyone recommend a supplier? It's just for him so it would be a low quantity order?

We've got an Alexandra Workwear store in town has anyone any experience of them?

There's also a company called Victory Workwear.

I've never used them myself but some of my clients do.

(Edited to change the name of the company)

I have used Top Print in Warrington. www.topprintltd.com

I have had shirts made there quite a few times. Cant remember the exact price off the top of my head but the thermal transfer of the logo and the black polo itself I think i remember being cheaper than I could have bought the shirt myself, under a tenner if I remember rightly.

I use Visionstyle at Stockport or Leisure Lifestyle at the same address.

I also use Boydells at Widnes on 0151 424 2594, but their range is a bit more limited.

You can put what you like through, god knows I do, but it doesn't mean that it won't be picked up and rejected at a later inspection. You should see my subsistence claims, entertaining £0 subsistence £1000's, I will find out at a later date whether my justifications are accepted but the worst that can happen (probably) is that I will have to pay it back. So nothing ventured...

A LOT worse can be done than making you pay the underpaid tax.

Essentially the Revenue CAN charge interest on the underpaid tax from the date it SHOULD have been paid until the date it is finally cleared.

They can also levy penalties which can be as high as the missing tax amounts - effectively doubling the amount payable.

Oh, and they will charge interest on the penalty amounts too.
