Errrr this is a strange one.
I have 2 problems at the moment and have tried (and failed) for a while to fix them, wondered if anyone might have any suggestions....

Well, first one is my pc wont recognise USB Mass Storage Devices, everything else USB powered seems fine (Belkin Wireless, mouse etc.) but when i plug one in I get the "bong" from windows realising its there, but nothing in My Computer. Checked Device Manager and its there, but no problems showing. It shows at Location 0 and all is apparently well. I have uninstalled it as a device but to no avail.
And secondly, (and since i built my pc) i have never had a keyboard work with it. It shows in Device Manager as a warning and if i uninstall and search for plug and play devices it finds it! :S
I've got a Microsoft Wired Keyboard 500 (Plugged in on PS2) and I went to ms website and found a driver, tried that and... nothing!
Can anyone shed any light on any ideas!
Thanks in advance.

mass storage - right click my computer, manage - do they appear in 'disk managment'? check for appropriate driver letter assignments and change if necessary. Check for clashes with network drives if you have any.

Keyboard - if you're typing this, I wouldn't loose any sleep over the device manager problem.

Ok, thanks for that!
I tried the mass storage and it was in disk management, but no assigned letter, so i guess just pick an un-used one. The only devices are HD (C, DVD Drive (Dand hosted DVD Drive (G so I guess anything other than them is fine?

And in regards to the keyboard, the problem I have is i need to remove the driver and scan for new hardware everytime, its a fag!
Just wondered if you had any ideas to cure it!

a) Yes anything that's not allready assigned is fine, infact it won't give you the choice to pick anything thats used allready.

b) What before the keyboard will work? Yes that does sound quite bothersome. Odd one. Does the keyboard have a USB connection or is it ps/2 only?

Ok, I'll change that code now!
Driving me insane that has been!
Yeah I have to do it everytime before I use it... and considering I built the pc nov05, its fair to say im fed up with it! It's on PS2, but im sure it would be compatible with USB through a convertor plug. I had assumed that being an M/S keyboard (even a cheap one!) it would have come with a convertor, but oh no!!

Yep the keyboard thing is a weird one, don't know the answer to be honest. Might be tempted to pick up a £10 USB keyboard.

hate to be a pain, but I assigned a drive letter etc. and then right-click, open... it opened the USB pen drive, but there was nothing in the address bar and nothing in my computer....
Interestingly all the files that were left on the drive were corrupted and/or damaged so i deleted all of them.
Any ideas neil?
Thanks for all your help!

Luke

Pay a visit to your BIOS and ensure that the management setting for "Plug and Play" is OS controlled.

Sorry for taking so long to get back...
I had a lookin my BIOS but couldn't find anything with a control for OS and PnP.
I found a page of PnP, which said -

PCI 1 IRQ Assignment Auto
PCI 2 IRQ Assignment Auto
PCI 3 IRQ Assignment Auto

If its any help, I've got Energy Star BIOS.

Any other ideas?!?
Thanks for the help!

So you can open the USB drives by right clicking and 'open' from disk managment, but they don't show up in my computer even after assigning a drive letter etc?

I'd guess that something else is installed that's causing a problem. Has the problem allways been there or did it start after a certain time?

It started after a certain time.
Used to work all A-OK.
I can't think of a time when it started to not work, but I did have some Windows registry problems when I overclocked and the PC didn't like it (Safe Mode and cancel the booting for OD software) but it didn't do Windows any good and I had to repair.
Maybe thats it.. confused
