I have seen a cheap ish laptop at ALdi, it is going for £539.99 and is a MEDION MD98200.

The features are:

Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium
Intel® Pentium® dual-core-processor T2060
Mobile DVB-T Freeview Digital TV reception*
Massive 1,024 MB DDR2 SDRAM memory
Huge 120 GB hard drive capacity
Extended battery life (High Performance Li-Ion)
Wireless Internet capability

The link is www.aldi.co.uk/

Does anyone know if this is a good machine or not? I need something primarily for surfing to be honest. I don't really programme anything!

I'd imagine you could get both feet on it, but won't the water get in?

The spec looks excellent for that price, so if you do buy it please report back on what you think.

My more knowledgeable IT chum tells me it is excellent spec also.

I'd want to know about support though.

I love it when they say massive 1GB memory/Huge 120GB drive.

In my physics days i would have read that and thought 1GB RAM...well they've told me the capacity, what do they mean by massive? 10 foot, 10 yards, 10 miles?

Curries have a managers spesh, worth checking...

Not checked the spec but if all you want it for is surfing, why do you need a laptop? You could get that spec for less as a desktop. If you want something portable, I would check the dimensions and weight of it, as cheap but powerful laptops tend to bulky and heavy. A high capacity battery (as the ad alludes too) can also add a significant amount of weight.

"massive" means "having mass" ... I can only assume it is a coded warning that the memory wotsit is extremely heavy silly

I've bought stuff from aldi in the past and about half of it has turned out to be good value and the other half complete rubbish. However, they have always given me my money back on the stuff which was rubbish without a problem although in every case the offending item actually broke rather than simply being something I didn't like much once I got it. I've never used their technical support lines as all the stuff that broke did so more or less immediately and the stuff that didn't is still working.

My uncle bought a desktop when they first started doing them. No complaints.

If I had a spare £500 I'd consider it. Maybe next time.

But check on what Curry's/Comet/PC World are offering for £500 also.

The last Dell flyer through my letterbox was offering a laptop for £499 IIRC. If you mainly want to surf the spec is not really going to matter much, just go for cheap and reliable...

Actually, you can get some impress Dell specs similar to the above for about £500. I'd be tempted to go with Dell rather than Aldi!

When I spec the Dell equivalent with the same CPU, RAM, hdd, etc. and accessories, I'll get
£638.92 Includes VAT & Shipping (Inspiron 6400 N03646). It's questionable if everyone needs the TV and nylon bag add-on though.

Go with slapmatt!

I have just checked and Dell offer a basic laptop for £349. Unless you need something specific, cheap and reliable will save you nearly £200. And, to misquote "Get" Carter, "They do this for a living".

If you're going with Dell (or any place where you can't walk in to a store and show a reciept) get the @ home waranty options (pricey but worth it) that way, they come to you to fix it. Otherwise you end up fighting with the Indians and THEN having to ship it back to them as well.

don't buy a dell unless you can support it yourself. and your right, once speced up they are not cheap, they are good at selling.

buy this, get it with 2G ram for less than £600. I wouldn't buy a laptop from Aldi.

That's the one, £349, not £249 as I posted earlier - I think that was the basic desktop. Still an impressive price for a notebook.
