Quick question please.

Do companies usually charge by the container, or do they also factor in weight.

Thanx

Few years since I was involved but at the time weight was not an issue, but if it lands and is over weight for transport then you will lose loads of money!
Price was the same for a 40' or 45' and a little cheaper for a 20'.
Best advice - get a good shipping agent.
Sorry couldn't be more help.

I believe that weight is only an issue for the 'road' part of the container movement.

Dunno if it helps at all but we've got container reciving facilities in the North West - loading/unloading ramps, fork lift trucks etc .

Be aware that with sea freight, to empty a groupage container will cost a lot, lot more than to simply bring the container off the vessel and have it delivered. IIRC cost of container handling is £85, cost of unloading etc is about £39 per cubic metre, and can be much higher. You have to check with your clearing agent. Cartage will probably not cost that much more for the entire container IME.

I just got a quote from my agent who does my buying for me in china, it was roughly 3600 USD for 40ft container and 2600 USD for 20ft.

My employers are now getting containers from China on a regular basis.

If it's any help we say - make sure that you use the port nearest to you, there's little or no difference in the seafreight but roadfreight can be double.

Make sure you get your paperwork in order to clear the port and customs as quick as you can Demurrage is highway robbery and lately most container providers will keep clocking it until the empty box is back at the port!

that sounds about right... dont forget the internal road freight and port clearance charges (and the effing VAT ) as well though!
