Can anyone help please (putting a bullet through the PC is an option).

The PC "Connects" to the internet, but won't display any pages. It comes up with the DNS screen. It also only transmits about 200 bytes or so? So realistically it isn't actually connecting at all, though it happily tells me it has done so.

It isn't my broadband though as I am able to log on using a spare machine. Don't think it is the modem as it seems happy and has both lights solid when it is plugged in.

Any ideas?

Ok, so you have 1 pc that connects and 1 that doesn't. Couple of things to try.

1. Go to the PC that works and ping google.com from a command line. (Start, run, cmd [return], at the prompt type Ping google.com. You should get a response. If so, try the same excercise on you non working PC. Post the results back here.

Working PC gives me round trip times etc..

Non-working PC says Ping Request could not find host google.com.
I also did a quick IPConfig /all, and it simply replied Windows IP Configuration, with no information.

There's your problem, no ip address. Are your ip addresses delivered by DHCP (normally by the router) or statically assigned ? Sounds like you are not even seeing the outside world, if you assign a static address on the non worker can you ping the working pc ?

Hmm, if I knew how to do that I maybe could, but part of the problem is that I can only have one PC connected to the internet at any one time, so I can't ping one PC from the other.

Not only that, I assume my IP addy is static, I use Virgin Broadband. I did try and put in a random IP address but it just did the same thing, and I also tried to get it to automatically assign an IP addy and that also failed.

edited to say

It has obtain IP addy automatically, and I put in a DNS server number...

Hi,

For some reason it has decided to work, I plugged the old PC back in with a view to trying to ping google again and it accessed the internet fine.

Really strange?!?! I just hope tomorrow when I switch it back on it still works!

But thank you for your help.

No probs. Now it's working just make a note of the ip adress for the pc and default gateway, useful for future troubleshooting.

I've got exactly the same problem, did what you outlined above

Results were PC that works Pinged OK.

PC that doesn't connect I get a reply

Ping request could not find host google.com .... check name and address and try again

Now I'm lost.. What do I do next?

Been told today to 1) unplug my Router, wait 30 secs and try again. Result no difference still won't connect.

If 1) fails try 2) switch of Router, wait 30 secs and try again. Result no difference still won't connect.

If 1) and 2) fail try switching the total system off at the mains, wait 30 secs and try again. result no difference still wont connect.

Anymore suggestions?

TYIA

1. Open up your browser and try to load up this page -> http://64.233.167.99/ What are the results? If this does nothing go to step 2...

2. On both PCs, go to the Start Menu -> Run -> Type 'cmd'. At the DOS prompt type 'ipconfig /all' and post the results back.

Typed in the page and got the google page up. I then typed in a search and got a list of results, when I select any of the links shown I get "page cannot be displayed".

AFAIK, you need to power-cycle NTL/Virgin Media modems before connecting a different device. They 'register' the MAC address (ethernet hardware address) of the last device connected and don't expect to suddenly see a different one. If you're regularly going to use different PCs/laptops, it might be worth buying a router like a LinkSys WRT54G for about £45. This stays permanently connected to the modem and allows more than one machine to surf the Net at the same time (with wires or wireless'ly).

Nyaargh.

Your DNS isn't set up properly, which is why you can access google by IP and not by name.

Start > Run, type cmd and hit enter. Type "ipconfig /all" then hit enter. What numbers does it show next to DNS servers?
