Help! No Synch On Monitor!
Discussion
Guys,
This is a wierd one. Boot up computer and you can see the boot sequence, then you see the Windown icons with the blue lines moving underneath to show that it is loading.
Then without warning and without fail, the screen goes blank and says "no synch"...
It was working fine last night. I left hte computer on overnight (as usual) and came back to find no picture!
Any suggestions? Have tried it with two monitors and both work with my other computer, so I am floored!
Reckon its the graphics card? I'll need to buy a new one tomorrow I reckon if it is...
What do you think?

If it was graphics card I wouldn't expect it to POST (Power on Self Test) which is the writing you see on first start up, which then turns into windows.
It looks as though your graphics card driver is corrupted which leads to a system hang when the system starts up.
As the system starts up as soon as you see the winodws flag keep your finger on the F8 key and put the system into safe mode.
Select start in safe mode and see if it works, this loads the minimum driver config and should get you started, if it does then go to help, system restore and roll it back a couple of days, and see if this works.
If it doesn't post here and we'll try another couple of tips.

Thanks mate, but no go there I am afraid. I tried to start it in safe mode and in safe with networking, but neither cut any mustard.
System restore might help, but there is no way there I'll be able to see the screen!
If I bought a new graphics card and installed it, do you think that would do the trick?
Time for more tips i think!!

Boot it up in VGA Safe Mode and look for any driver issues in device manager. Then select a slightly higher resolution and try that, repeat until desired mode is achieved. If it won't, then it could be the monitor or cable.
Have done this. Unfortunately, its the same problem. I can't get past the Window loading screen. As soon as there is a hint of Windows coming in, its goes off synch.
I am really beginning to think a new graphics card should sort this... Any further thoughts? Do you reckon that is a guaranteed cure if the LCD and cable are fine (which they are)?
Thanks?
can you change the bios to use a cd as a 1st boot device, if it won't boot into safe mode, then your option at this stage is probably to do a repair install of windows using your windows cd, follow these instructions to do this
www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
you won't lose any documents or settings it will just re-install your windows files and update them if any have become corrupted.

just to re-iterate a new graphics card won't do it as you won't be able to install drivers etc as the system won't boot to windows in default mode so you won't be able to start a new graphics card hence giving you the same problem you have with your old card

Not 100% convinced it's a graphics card problem, 101 things can cause xp not to boot. XP repair might be a good start if you haven't got any bits to swap around, failing that I'd give it to a trusted PC shop.
eta, try it with *nothing* plugged in except monitor, power and keyboard.

Does it actually boot? There's no direct way to tell unless it's networked, but for example if you open windows explorer using the hotkey, then hit the 'down' arrow once it will try to access the floppy drive which you should be able to hear. You can also go through the shutdown sequence and confirm it does turn itself off. That would tell you whether the whole thing is crashing, or just the video card/driver going t!ts up during the boot sequence (perhaps when it changes graphics mode).
Unfortunately, I haven't got a windows CD anymore. So pretty stuffed. Looks like it might have to go to the shop.
What a bitch. I haven't had to take my pc to the shop in 8 years!
I might try to change the graphics card and see... maybe the card is overheating ? Then again, probably not as it cuts off at same point everytime.
