I've got a shoot coming up in the next week or two involving a very special vintage Ferrari.

The car is rosso red (inevitably !), and I'm keen to shoot against a dramatic backdrop, ie chalk pits, or a quarry. Any ideas ?

Where are you or the car based? That would help with suggestions.

I've done some research into similar location before - not a lot doing in the South - you want Wales or the North. Ideally I think you'd want a slate mine for that dark grey shimmering background, similar to that which Matt shot Steve's Aston against, brilliant location for a car shoot:

If you do find something in the south please let us know!

Ther's lots of chalk in Hampshire (Alton/Andover/Basingstoke) but I don't know of any quarries.

I was looking at a quarry at Shoreham cement works (disused). The quarry is still active. The cement works is also an interesting backdrop. So far I've drawn a blank on finding someone to contact about permission.

Along the way, I came across a whole underground of forums for people into "exploring" sites like this (as well as abandoned hospitals). Mainly kids I suspect, and all a bit odd, but it does seem to make it harder for people like us who might occasionally want to visit somewhere to take pics non-destructively (to ourselves or the sites). Many of the sites consequently seem to have "excitable" security guards.

I used a local location to take some pics of my car and was politely asked to leave by the security guards. I thought it was public roads but apparently not. Shame as I wanted to get soem shots of my car reflected in the dark windows

That would make a stunning backdrop....

Agreed. However, Scotland is quite a trek.....

I'm pretty sure that that shot was taken in the Lake District rather than Scotland but it is still a trek from London.

Amberley Chalk pits in Hampshire (I think might be w.sussex). It's open to the public as a tourist attraction though. Was the location for View to a kill, where zorin plants the explosive down the mine to trigger an earthquake in silicon valley. The bit where the portacabin turns into an airship is at the far end.

(went there on a school trip YEARS ago)

Tell you what - that quarry shot could be a pile of coal, similar to the ones at Didcot power station...

Hows that for an idea.

Or a pile of sand/salt in a local council gritting yard (I'm thinking of the one in the igloo building off the M25 at the exit for Brands hatch)

Or maybe a huge compost heap, such as the one at Kew gardens as shown on TV the other week?

Stuart, 4x4 days are organised by John Morgan at Shoreham Cement Works, you could try asking him who to contact, or turn up on a sunday when it's open and take some photos - you have to drive around most of the buildings to get to the main car park and the 4x4 stuff. Can't think of many places that would be suitable to be honest though, there's a load of old cars and buses being repaired or dumped around one side and the other is quite close to the chalk face so there isn't much room to get a distance from the building, but then I've always been up there to play in the Land Rover, not take pictures around the buildings! Might be worth a visit when it's open though, £3 to spectate and you can go watch people doing daft stuff in the quarry too.

One of mine from last time I was there

A few more in here

You could also try an Industrial Estate for some decent backgrounds.

It's all your fault that I now find myself driving around looking at the local industrial estates...

last night I found myself driving past a local industrial estate as the sun set, thinking how good my red car would look against the stainless steel sided building reflecting the red of the sunset.

I even started to work out how to get my car there...

Thanks Richard - I'll have to look into that. I drove in just to turn around and the buildings looked quite good for perhaps a couple of shots.

Cheers
