I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I seem to remember that there was a mini tripod that was fairly universally rated. Think it was on this forum. If it wasn't then suggestions are very much welcome.

Really don't want to spend too much as I only have a point and shoot and am very much a beginner.

I have a Velbon CX Mini. I like it, although might be a bit too much for a p&s

Edit: or maybe not

How mini do you mean? I have a dinky little Slik tripod which is ok, certainly better than the desktop tripods you get but it is very small and won't hold my current camera.

Ha ha, good question. Well the two mentioned are what I was thinking budget wise.

I notice the Velbon is 64cm extended and the Slik is 99cm. When it comes to using them in general, would I find the shorter one limiting at all? I appreciate it depends on what you are photgraphing but in general terms.

Thats a good idea - if I wanted a small tripod for a p&s I'd get one of those for sure. The problem with small tripods (in my experience anyway) is that they aren't very flexible i.e. you can't use them close to the floor and most have the legs 'tied' together which is limiting. A mate has a velbon jobbie that is small but extends well and will go close to the floor, but it doesn't do anything a gorillapod won't do imo.

(fwiw my Slik tripod is about 25cms tall lol)

Edited because I'm stupid - meant to say small tripods CAN'T be used close to the floor but had previously put the word CAN in!

If you want really small then I would second the Gorillapod. I've got one for our little Canon IXUS and it really is a well designed and built piece of kit. Very flexible but still strong enough to support the camera

Must say the Gorillapod is a great piece of kit.
I have the gorillapod SLR (it has a detachable mount) which is great with a compact but struggles with the DSLR.
I should have gone for the SLR-zoom as it's a bit mor substantial.

If your after a Slik I have one listed on a well known auction site at the moment for £7.50 buy-it-now, you should be able to find it from that if you want

Seconded yes

bought mine in the states and found it excellent for attaching to reylings etc.
Get the big one and it will hold most sensible lenses apart from the long stuff.
