All,

Following the news that I'm shortly to be made redundant, I've decided to set up my own IT Support company and try and make a go of working for myself.

The first issue is what to call the company, and here's where PH comes in.

I can't decide whether or not I should have the letters IT in the company name
If I do go with IT in the name (delta IT for example) then when it comes to the web address, should I just have delta.co.uk or should I go for deltait.co.uk or even delta-it.co.uk

Any thoughts / conventional wisdom I'm unaware of?

also any thoughts on a good company name would be appreciated, as I've only had a couple of ideas and I'm not sure how good they are!!

I had this problem with my Company 'Click Next'.

We develop software that tests and monitors saellite communication systems.

The name was dreamt up during a pissed discussion in a pub in Kentish Town (London) about 12 years ago.

To me it describes the philosophy that good software should, to a user be a case of simply 'Clicking the Next button' whilst answering a few questions along the way.

I thought it was quite catchy and promissed myself that when I went it alone I'd call the Company by this name.

Regarding choosing a domain name, 'ClickNext' was owned by someone in the states and they want $K for me to buy it. I simply went with click-next which cost me bugger all through JB & Register1.

I'd say that a '-' is not a problem in a domain name, especially if you have business cards and good leeter/fax/invoice header that make the name plain to see.

I guess if the majority of business contact is via telephone then it could become a problem describing the hyphen/minus-sign.

If you are looking to generate business fro ma web-site and hits through search engines then I think the name might be important, however in my experience much of your early work will be word of mouth from people you already know, so the name of the Company isn't too important, so long as it catches the philosophy of the work you do.

I wouldn't worry about getting the letters 'IT' into your domain name.

The actual trading name should be something you like. The domain name can be anything you like as well but should be geared towards Keyword searches for your industry.

Example we had a client we have just built a website for. Their trading name was CWG Contracts LTD, they sell large span conservatories, so we purchased the domain names largespanconservatories.com and co.uk

Im never convinced your domain names needs to be an exact copy of your trading name, IF someone knows your company they will probably know your domain name, or they will google on your trading name.

if they dont know your trading name then they will google for you any way.

So imho its much more important to make sure your domain name is simple and easy to spell and more importantly you make sure your google ranking is good and an acurate reflection of what you do,

Long urls are a pita for everyone to spell correctly and dont forget it also relates to how easily it is for people to get your e-mail address right.

i.e. which is easier to read and type

www.midlandclassicrestorations.co.

or something like
www. mc-online.co.uk

I dont think the domain name needs to say what you do as thats the job of the site its self..

Cheers

From the attraction of new web based business the companies keywords ie industry sector can play an important role. You can have of course many domain names mapped to one site so that solves the problem.
