hello you lot,

the fans on my laptop seem to have stopped kicking in and out and as a consequence the casing appears to getting very hot, especially since I'm working very long hours at the mo. is this likely to do any damage or does it just stop things operating as fast etc as they should?

id appreciate your thoughts, thanks in advance.

doesnt sound good.

Laptops do tend to get hot anyway if you use them a long time plugged to the mains.

If your certain the fans have burnt out, then you should consider getting it sorted - especially if its on for the majority of your working day.

I'd also reccomend backing everything up ASAP = should the worse happen!

yup.

If your using Outlook - just back up the .PST (IIRC) file and the .PAB if you want the address book as well.

not 100% sure - but I think the extensions (and files) are the same..

Best way to check is to do a search for *.PST on your whole computer - though just make sure you record the folder the file comes from.

If there isnt one, umm, cant help im afraid (not that ive really helped anyway, but i can help even less)

Outlook Express backing up linky:

Might be worth blowing air into the fans - they might just have got dusty and stuck.. 100% worth moving to Outlook, if only for the ease of backing things up. Two fingers to the Gold One.

yes Always a good move. Try to get the thing apart as much as you can, then get one of those air duster cans can blow out all the rubbish.

Alternatively gaffer tape a hoover over the vent, make sure its airtight and switch it on.

That might suck out anything that is stopping the fan moving.
