Are they any good, I have about 8-10 companies approaching me at the moment to do work for them but I already have a job, I've thought about setting up on my own for ages but as I seem to have a bit of interest I thought I'd check it out.

I have no idea how to setup or indeed have the time so are all these websites crap or has anyone used one that was really quite good?

You mean ltd company formation?

My accountant uses Stanley Davis (www.stanleydavis.co.uk) who apparently are pretty good.

Are you sure you need a ltd company though? If it's just to sub a few jobs out then it might be overkill but if you are looking to run something long term it makes more sense.

Just be sure to bare in mind the costs of running the company too.

They have approached me for IT support, yearly contracts so I would have to take them on full time, because of the costs involved if anything goes wrong I'd rather they couldn't sue me and take my houses.

If I setup a company I could go and find other companies and not just the ones who have come to me

It' not as simple as that. If you traded fraudulently or negligently, the fact that you were operating as a company could be ignored by the courts.

Taking out some sort of Professional Indemnity Insurance would also be advisable, whether a limited comapny or a sole trader.

Its not hard to set up a company anyway, you don't need a company to do it for you.

We always use UK Plc for any formations, nice and quick and cheap, don't need anything more.

Articles of Association and Memerandi arent back of napkin jobs, I'd get help off someone who knows what they are doing.

People who want to run a business through a limited company normally buy what used to be called an "Off The Shelf" company. Essentially, the company has already been set up by a company formation agent. When you come along looking to start a new limited company business, the formation agent sells you the pre-set up company and handles the necessary paperwork to ensure that the new directors and shareholders are properly and legally transferred and notified to Companies House.
The companies you acquire through the internet are essentially just another way of buying an "Off The Shelf".

Hardly anyone would bother trying to set up a brand new limited company from scratch. It is actually quite difficult and it is much easier to go the "Off The Shelf" route as outlined above.

"Off The Shelf" companies are not that expensive to purchase these days, typically less than £100 (often a LOT less). The expensive part of a limited company is ensuring it is run and maintained properly throughout its life.

Hmm a friend of mine recommended them for the company registration but strongly recommended not using them for any other services in his experience (I'm also looking for a virtual receptionist, see http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Hope this helps

Don't use companies made simple... nightmare.

Lots of paperwork missed out, didn't forward legal papers, complete litigation nightmare!

You're better off going on to the companies house website, http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk and requesting a pack yourself, costs £20 I believe.

It also means you can read through it properly, familiarise yourself with any unknown information (directors roles, etc), as starting a LTD company is a lot of responsibility, so you don't want to be forgetting to do returns, etc...

They seem ok with me, and I have an independant accountant who was also happy with the paperwork and their firm is dealing with returns.
