My dad said to me that he wants to open up a post office in my name (I'm 21, have gcses, a levels, and degree all at A-C grades/2.1)

The reason being is that it's guaranteed income (fixed wage), and I hire someone to manage the shop on a day to day basis and then visit every day or every other day to check up on things.

The application process seems lax, as my cousin runs one and she and her husband have no formal qualifications, like I do. So if they can get one, I'm sure I could. My dad said I'd have to go into a partnership with him as I'm too young.

Does anyone here run a post office? Any advice?

Is this a sound investment? The post office has been in trouble (Royal Mail).

Fair enough.

This one is based in a small village, and is the only one there.

I have been looking for a job but no luck so may go freelance, but the security of a post office would be ideal.

Any other words of advice?

Thanks

I live in a small village, and our postmaster says it's the worst thing he ever did take over the PO, Goverment keep taking his customers away!

I would not have thought it would be a good long term job.

HMG are removing many of the services from the PO and I would say a lot of Post Offices are going to close in the next few years.

The only chance PO branches have is if they are allowed to open a bank (which currently they are not AFAIK), then I'd think that all the work the Government have taken off them would almost instantly be replaced. I know I'd give my local PO branch my business on the banking front, as think it is important to support local businesses.

The Alliance and Leicester operate through Post Office branches but I doubt there's enough business there to attract a steady revenue stream.

A&L do indeed operate through PO's - but get this - you can only bank cash - all cheques for A&L business accounts have to be sent to Bootle in the post - how ferkin stupid is that??"?"??!!

PS - bear in mind that the GiroBank, as it used to be called, is actually now A&L!!!!

PS - as said above - probably (90%+) a total waste of time, money & effort - its a dying industry - you can go online and get better service and range of products - hell - you can even buy stamps online @ www.royalmail.com - LOL!
