On my way to work last night, going from Bawtry to Everton (if anyone knows it), the council (im guessing) have installed new Cats Eyes which glow a tinted blue, and no longer need the light of your headlights to reflect it back..

While this is all good to help show people where the road is, it is rather distracting seeing blue lights flashing by the side of your car as you travel down the road.

It looks more like a runway now than a road, im sure in case of emergency a small aircraft would have no problems using this road for its landing pad.

Has anyone else seen these things?

They are so bright i turned me lights off momentarily and could still see where i was going...

Just thought i'd mention em =)

I thought blue were to signify the entry to a police/fire/ambulance station..?

They're not exactly a deep blue, more like the blue tint on those new head light bulbs..

But they're situated on a dual carriage way, which then bends to the left (depending on which way you drive it, of course), and single's off..

A car came off there the other day, i guess not knowing the road, and the large bend, maybe thats why we have super-duper, 60 watt, road-implanted, light bulb like, cats eyes =)

I think these are new solar-powered cats eyes. The idea is they charge up during the day (and from headlights (?)) and then discharge at night.

Seem to remember they were in the news last year. They were being tested outside Kidderminster and the locals kept digging them up!

I found the people who make these cats eyes.. aswell as some other pretty damn cool stuff, like cats eyes that warn you of a car infront of you in thick fog, removing the danger of rear-ending someone because you couldn't see their rear lights til it was too late.

Great products, apart from the supposed speed cam cats eyes..

I live near the kidderminster ones, they are weird when you first see them, but after a while you get used to them, I think here they have over done them a bit tho.

theres red ones for junctions, white for the middle, green for the outside, it does look like a runway, and you can see the road for a mile ahead.

it saves on street lights, installing powering up, maintaining etc. but they need to spread the scheme to more than one road. just as your getting used to them, they stop, leaving you with a black empty road.

i seem to remember a while back on "tomorrows world" about a new cats eye being developed, whereby they turn blue when the temperature goes below zero.
just a thought

Yep, that's one of the options described in the website mentioned further up the thread.

It's an impressive system with some great potential, thanks for the link.

Only problem may be that they will encourage faster speeds in the dark for instance without being able to see and assess the road surface. Even worse, faster speeds would never do in the current political climate and once the politicians work that one out what future?

You will never stop the radar guided repmobile from rear-ending you in the fog, this device sounds like it will make the road safer (which is good, obviously) but I suspect rather than removing the danger, it just means that idiot is going faster when he hits you.

Cheers,

On a road outside Thurcroft (near Rotherham,) there's some cat's eyes that twinkle when you go past them, and you canb see them in your wing mirror - not sure why, but they're like little Xmas lights - sweet!
