Buying Laptops off Ebay

Hi all
I haven't bought anything off ebay, but some of the bargains that are on the site make it very attractive.
Any pitfalls?
Any advice?

Make sure that you check the sellers ratings and try to buy the item from a reputable one. If you buy, make sure that you are covered by you credit card for fraud so that you won't be out of pocket if the worst happens. The majority of purchaser don't have any problems.

I recently won an auction for a laptop which looked very real, down to detailed specs of a specfic Dell Asset no being posted. Price was very good - too good really. Seller insisted on payment via Western Digital money transfer, and the only contact details forthcoming was a hotmail address. When I queried the payment method I started getting two streams of replies - one from the "seller" and one from the real onwer of the hijacked hotmail address.
Needless to say I passed, and bought a brand new Dell from Dell.
Be careful out there. I've bought lots of smaller stuff off eBay no problems, but you do need to be very careful for larger purchases.
Edited to add: BTW the "seller" has a very good ebay rating, but of course he wasn't the seller at all! Like I said, be careful!

I believe that for amounts over £100 the credit card company is jointly liable for any failure in supply of goods or services. On the few occasions that I've asked them for help, they've always taken 'my side' and helped to resolve it. Once I sent my CC number in an e-mail by mistake; I phoned my CC company and they said something like 'Don't worry, if anything turns up on your statement that you don't know about, let us know and we'll sort it out.'
