Well, that was a bit of a disaster.

2nd in the queue.
Carphonewarehouse chip-and-pin system down so no-one could buy a phone.
Eventually, 45 mins later they agreed to accept cash.
Get home, attempt to activate and get:

"O2 has found a problem with your existing mobile account" when I try to activate via iTunes with my PAC code.

I called O2, who obviously have had lots of similar calls. They say it is a technical issue and to try in the morning... frown

Hmm...

Do you really want an O2 account?

If not, and you already have a perfectly serviceable SIM with an acceptable data tariff, email me and I'll help you hack the iPhone.

I can do both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 now hehe

Thanks for the offer.

My tariff (on Orange which I hated) ran out 6 months ago, so I've been on t-mobile PAYG awaiting the iPhone since then. The O2 tariff, whilst not amazing, isn't bad for the minutes/texts and especially data I want - so I've not problem IF the service is any good.

I'll wait until the morning and see if it works. If not, I'll hack.

Fed up now as it took over an hour to buy due to chip-and-pin problems at the Carphonewarehouse store. Ended up buying in cash!!!

Ps. It does LOOK nice though smile

Give me a shout if you need help hacking it.

T-Mobile and Orange work out of the box, Vodafone needs a bit of tweaking, but I've done them all (mine was 100% usable on 12th Sept)

Yep, same message with me - haven't tried calling customer services yet, ho hum.

Wandered into my local Carphone Warehouse in Perth at about 6.15, only one other customer, no queues - lots of confused staff and a half an hour wait for the chip and pin to work. Worked eventually, must have been hell in busier shops though!

Erm.. why wouldn't they accept cash? It is, as crazy as it sounds, legal tender.

From what I read, CPW and O2 recruited around 1,400 extra people to cope with the surge in demand for the iPhone. Seems quite a few people for 'just a phone' but the numbers make shocking reading! I was chatting to the wife about it the other day...

1,000,000 iPhones sold in the US (according to Apple)
$299 each
Minimum 18 month contract at $40 a month
= A hell of a lot of money before you even use the thing! No wonder everyone has been failing over each other to get it.

On a separate note - my wife's contract is up in Jan for her Nokia on 3. Wants to move away from 3 as quickly as and to a more reliable provider, such as Orange, O2 or Vodafone (well better coverage anyway). iPhone looks cool and would like something like this.

So, is it a blokes gadget or could it be a woman's phone? Are they worth getting?

Ladies do love them, so I guess it's the first proper crossover gadget that appeals to both sexes....

As to whether it's a bloke's gadget, it's a full-on unix machine underneath the fancy exterior. Whether that spins your wheel or not is your call. It does mine, and I think it's damn good fun to hack about with smile

Mine is still 'awaiting activation'. Calling O2 has got nowhere - it will done in their own good time...they had better not decline me!

Phoned O2 and I've got to email them my port code - meanwhile continue with new number. Got through activation (barstewards wanted a credit card deposit thanks to their credit check - might have to investigate my credit rating...) and I'm happily doing the initial sync.....

How long did it take for them to get back to you?

I finally managed to start my activation at 4:30am
Got an email at 4:32am saying my activation had been referred
Got email at 8:07 to say my activation i now being processed.

Called O2, who couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything, just I have to wait...

(Now when I connect I get the 'store may be busy message....')

I think hacking might actually have been the easier/quicker option!!

Didn't bother starting until this morning - immediately ran up against the PAC code brick wall, phoned O2, was told it was a known bug, and to continue without trying to use a PAC code. Pretty straightforward after that, although my address was spelt wrong so I had to shorten the initial search string to find it. Wasn't expecting to have to make a credit card deposit - although I wonder if it's actually something to do with their systems buckling....

£100 for 3 months, then refunded.

Edited once I'd read the email confirmation.....

[cynical hat on] It's to enable them to try to trace you if your handet is never activated onto O2, ie if you unlock it..[/cynical hat off]

Only reason I can think of...

I bought two iPhones yesterday; one for myself and one for my fiancee who has no credit record.

I'm fortunate to have an excellent credit score (I check often via Experian due to my business) and mine sailed through, including the transfer of my current O2 number. My fiancee had to pay the £100 deposit even though all direct debits were coming out of my account. Both phones registered by 7pm last night.

Aside from the blip with CPW everything has gone very smoothly smile
